Area Sports Scene: Hanover golfer records ace at South Hills

A Hanover golfer recently scored a hole-in-one while golfing at South Hills Golf Club, Hanover.

Gene Groft used a 9-wood to ace the par-3, 153-yard 16th hole. The shot was witnessed by Chris Small, P.J. Kirkearand and Caled Bryant.

Nace tops South Hills women

Donna Nace posted the low gross and low net scores in the South Hills 9 Hole Golf Association's tournament on Tuesday at South Hills Golf Club, Hanover.

Nace's 45 was the low gross score by two shots over Nancy Downing. Nace's 30 was the low net score by two strokes over Joanne Eyler and Downing.

Nancy Bealing, who chipped into No. 9, recorded the fewest putts, 15. Felicia Miller and Downing each attempted 16 putts.

Helen Hagarman birdied No. 5.

Three take top honors in tourney

Three golfers took top honors in the recent Labor Day Flag Tournament at Hanover Country Club, Abbottstown.

Playing from the blue tees, Steve Sheppard and Rick Sasse tied for first place with the tee shot on the 19th hole.

Playing from the white tees, Jim Huston claimed first place by completing the 19th hole.

Golf lessons set at South Hills

Golf lessons for adults and juniors have been scheduled this month at South Hills Golf Club, Hanover.

Adult group lessons, which cost $95 per person for six hours of instruction, are scheduled. The fee is $80 per person if paid before the first lesson.

Junior group lessons for youths aged 9 and up are also scheduled.

The fees are $35 per person for four hours of instruction, but drops to $20 if paid before the first lesson.

Attitude plans tryout sessions

The Central Maryland Attitude National eighth-grade AAU basketball team will conduct tryouts from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 18, Thursday, Sept. 20, and Tuesday, Sept. 25, at Manchester Valley High School in Manchester, Md.

The team will play one league game weekly in the fall and winter and will compete in several East Coast tournaments. The Attitude will play in the AAU Nationals in Florida and participate in collegiate recruiting showcases in the spring and summer with practices scheduled twice weekly in Carroll and Howard counties in Maryland.
