Everyone and their mother is on Washington State tonight

Wow this line has gone from -14 to -11.5 in the span of a few days

I do not get the Washington State angle at all

Looks like people are 1.) Overvaluing Mike Leach 2.) Overvaluing Washington State since they are a Pac 12 team 3.) Underestimating the talent level of this BYU team 4.) Don't understand how tough of an environment Lavell Edwards Stadium is to play at

Tons and tons of value on -11.5, thought there was value at -14.

Samsung wins patent case against Apple in Japan

TOKYO: A Tokyo court on Friday dismissed Apple Inc's claim that Samsung had infringed on its patent -- the latest ruling in the global legal battle over smartphones that pits the two technology titans against each other.

Samsung Electronics Co of South Korea, the world's largest maker of phones, welcomed the Tokyo District Court ruling that its technology to synchronize mobile players with computers did not infringe on Apple patents as confirming "our long-held position."

"We will continue to offer highly innovative products to consumers, and continue our contributions toward the mobile industry's development," the company said in a statement.

The Apple lawyer present at the courthouse declined comment, and it was not immediately clear whether Apple would appeal.

In a session lasting a few minutes, Judge Tamotsu Shoji said he did not think Samsung products fell into the realm of Apple technology and dismissed the lawsuit, filed by Apple in August last year.

Apple, the Cupertino, California-based maker of the hit iPhone and iPad, is embroiled in similar legal squabbles around the world over whether Samsung smartphones, which relies on Google Inc.'s Android technology, illegally used Apple designs, ideas or technology.

In one such case, a jury in California ruled last week that Samsung products illegally used such Apple creations as the "bounce-back" feature when a user scrolls to an end image, and the ability to zoom text with a tap of a finger.

The jury awarded Apple $1 billion in damages, and a judge is now evaluating Apple's request to have eight Samsung products pulled from shelves and banned from the U.S. market, including popular Galaxy model smartphones. Samsung's latest hit, Galaxy S3, was not part of the US ruling.

Friday's ruling was the first held in Japan in the Samsung-Apple global court battle, but other technology is being contested by the two companies in separate legal cases in Japan

Apple products are extremely popular among Japanese consumers, but major Japanese carriers such as NTT DoCoMo sell Samsung smartphones as well. Japanese electronics maker Sony Corp also makes smartphones similar to Samsung's, using Android technology.

Samsung has sold more than 50 million Galaxy S and Galaxy S2 smartphones around the world. The legal battle also involves Samsung's Tab device, which Apple claims infringes on patents related to the iPad tablet.

Geoffrey Boycott considers fitness issues as a reason for Australian Cricket?s downfall - Cricket News Update

Geoffrey Boycott, former England captain, said that the Australian side needs to overcome its fitness issues and keep the young crop of fast-bowlers fit in order to regain its past glory in all formats of the game.

Australian cricket team has been in a downward spiral ever since the loss of some of its most celebrated players during the last few years. The retirement of the likes of Shane Warne, Glenn McGrath, Adam Gilchrist, Matthew Hayden initiated the fall of the Australian cricket which saw their relegation in the ICC rankings.

The once invincible Australians, who dominated the cricketing fields around the world, have relinquished their thrones in both the Test and ODI formats and are currently ranked a shocking ninth spot, below Bangladesh in the T20Is.

Boycott however, feels that every great team has to go through a transitional phase, as they cannot stay at the top forever, like the great Australian and West Indian sides of the past.

??Look at the West Indies and their team with four quick bowlers and all of those great batsmen and how they have faded away,? the former England skipper said. ?Likewise Australia faded away, England came to the fore and now South Africa. It doesn?t stay the same, life changes.?

The 71-year-old however, feels that fitness issues of the players have been a big letdown for the Australian cricket, which is trying hard to reverse the downslide.

Injury woes have troubled the Aussies, which has kept most of its key players out of the contest in the past 12 months. In July, One-day specialist Brett Lee was forced to retire after frequent injury setbacks, adding to a list of former players that also included Nathan Bracken, who also broke down due to injury.

?I think the Australians have a fine array of seam bowlers but one of the problems seems to be keeping them fit,? he said.

The injury to teenage sensation Patrick Cummins underlined the current crisis which also included James Pattinson, Peter Siddle, Mitchell Johnson, Ryan Harris and all-rounder Shane Watson ? all of whom have battled injuries in the last year alone.

?The young bowlers that they have found seem to be going down injured on a regular basis. They have some very good seam bowlers but if they are not fit, they are no use,? the former English captain said.

Your Animals and Glaucoma | ArticlePDQ.com

Glaucoma is increased pressure within a person?s eye. Tissues inside the eye create a clear water (?aqueous humor?) that keeps the eye?s condition and feeds the tissues inside the eye. The balance of liquid production and drainage is responsible for maintaining normal stress within the eye. In glaucoma, the drain becomes blocked, but the eye proceed generating liquid, causing increase eye force, which can actually can cause the eye to enlarge and stretch, in addition to blinding the eye. Glaucoma is not limited by humans ? your pets can be affected by it, too!Glaucoma is classified as either primary or secondary in animals. Key Glaucoma is an inherited problem, developing breeds which range from American Cocker Spaniels and Basset Hounds to Arctic Circle breeds (Huskies, Elkhounds, and so on), and Chow Chows, Shar Peis, Labrador Retrievers. Touhg it?s uncommon in cats, it can happen and is generally secondary to chronic uveitis. Major Glaucoma usually begins in one single eye, however in many animals, both eyes are eventually involved by it, leading to complete blindness. When other eye conditions trigger lowered liquid discharge secondary Glaucoma occurs. Common factors behind secondary glaucoma are irritation in the eye (uveitis), high level cataracts, eye cancer and serious retinal detachment.Determining if your pet has primary or secondary glaucoma is essential, as the prognosis and treatment differ for every type. (Many pet insurance policies protect the checks and authorities needed seriously to consider your pet, therefore consult your provider.) Veterinary ophthalmologists use slit lamp biomicroscopy, indirect ophthalmoscopy, and gonioscopy to determine the cause and type of glaucoma in your pet. Gonioscopy will help see how susceptible your pet?s outstanding visual eye is to develop glaucoma when primary glaucoma is suspected. This test involves putting a particular lens on the attention, enabling assessment of the drainage; it is usually performed under sedation or anesthesia.Glaucoma can affect the eye( s) of your pet( s) in the subsequent ways:oVision Loss ? Pressure injury to the optic nerve and reduced blood flow to the retina, the ?film in the camera,? results in loss of vision. However, if the attention pressure remains uncontrolled, the retina degenerates and vision is completely lost. Permanent blindness can happen within several hours if the force is quite high and the glaucoma develops rapidly;oUnfortunately, the first attention to build up primary glaucoma in dogs is often already blind by the time the infection is known. Because of this, therapy in these cases is directed at relieving vexation in the blind eye and preventing or slowing glaucoma development in another eye. Gonioscopy of the rest of the visual vision helps determine how to treat this eye;oPain ? Increased intraocular pressure is painful. Dogs, cats (and also human) have normal intraocular pressures between 10-20 mmHg. Glaucoma usually results in difficulties 45-65 mmHg in dogs and cats, that will be considerably greater than in individuals with glaucoma, making it a lot more painful for your pet. The pain remains in the form of a constant headache or migraine. This disquiet can result in lethargy, frustration, or decreased appetite, but is often unapparent to the owner, thus be observant! The only way to establish if your furry friend is suffering from glaucoma is to have the intraocular pressures calculated by a veterinarian. Indicators of glaucoma may include a red or bloodshot eye and/or cloudy cornea. Vision loss is also characteristic of glaucoma. However, loss of vision in one single eye is frequently maybe not apparent since animals cover with their remaining eye. In the course of time, the increased pressure will cause the attention to extend and become increased. Regrettably, eyes usually are completely impaired by the time they become enlarged. If your pet has lost one eye to principal glaucoma and the other eye is prone to developing glaucoma: The normal timeframe for another attack to happen in the remaining eye is 8 months; protective medical treatment for the ?good? eye delays the onset of glaucoma by very nearly 23 months.Since glaucoma occurs because fluid isn?t emptying from the eye quickly enough, the reasonable therapy is to open up the drain, however, opening ? and keeping open ? the drain is difficult. Consequently, several glaucoma treatments are also aimed at decreasing fluid production by the eye.Medical Therapy ? While there are numerous eye drops and tablets that aid decrease fluid production or increase fluid discharge from your pet?s eye, they rarely handle glaucoma long-term. Therefore, they are used primarily to simply help prevent/delay glaucoma?s beginning in the remaining visible eye and as temporary therapy until surgery can be carried out in the damaged eye.Surgical Therapy ? The kind of surgical procedures available for glaucoma is determined by whether the eye still has the potential for vision. For visible eyes, intraocular pressure could be reduced by doing a cycloablation procedure and a drainage implant procedure. For forever blind eyes, the eye could be eliminated with the choice of putting a clean prosthetic ball implant in the eye socket just before skin closure, an implant placed inside the eye giving your pet a partially artificial eye, or an injection into the eye that kills the fluid-producing cells and decreases the pressure. The best treatment for your pet depends on the type of glaucoma, the potential for vision, and your choice for the cosmetic appearance of your pet?s experience. The key to using the most effective possibility of preserving vision is early detection and regular ophthalmic examinations.

ASUS Transformer Pad Infinity TF700KL with LTE hands-on: 25 mbps down in Deutschland

We knew (as of a few days ago) that ASUS' Transformer Pad Infinity TF700KL was coming to Germany with LTE on Vodafone's network, but now we have an idea of just how schnell those speeds are. We got our hands on a unit that notched 10.7 Mbps up and about 25 down. This device has a dual-core Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 chip under the hood and offers (as mentioned in our previous post) 16GB of internal storage. The tablet's design isn't much different from that of the TF700 Transformer Pad -- the difference here is that super-fast LTE connection. Check out our gallery below for a closer look.

Between convention speeches come the campaign ads

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) ? President Barack Obama is "taxing wheelchairs and pacemakers." Mitt Romney would bring "an end to the Medicare promise." The Democratic incumbent has "hurt" the middle class and hasn't done "what we need him to do." If the Republican challenger wins, "the middle class loses."

Got all that?

Outside the halls for the two national party conventions, the candidates and their deep-pocketed allied groups are airing millions of dollars of television commercials ? regardless of whether they are factual or not ? to reinforce the messages sure to be delivered within.

In Florida alone, where the GOP will nominate Romney, more than $105 million has been spent on ads. North Carolina, where Obama will accept his party's nod next week, has seen at least $56 million worth of commercials during this campaign. Overall, political parties and outside groups have spent a stunning $540 million on TV ads, with most of the money being expended in battleground states.

Millions of dollars more are being spent this week in both Florida and North Carolina ? polls show them to be competitive ? as the two candidates look to tap into heightened political interest around the conventions that will send Romney and Obama into a two-month push to the election.

Republicans begin a bevy of speeches Tuesday, culminating with Romney's address on Thursday.

Even if Florida voters wanted to tune out the event in Tampa, they'll get healthy dose of the presidential campaign ? during morning television, sandwiched between evening news segments and all across the TV dial at night. The same goes for the Democratic show headed for Charlotte, N.C., next week. It wraps up with Obama making his nationally televised case for a second term.

Republicans desperately want to reclaim Florida and its 29 electoral votes after Obama notched a decisive win four years ago. North Carolina, with 15 electoral votes on the line, is hotly contested after Obama's 2008 victory broke a long string of Republican wins.

Florida has 10 distinct TV markets, making it a costly place for campaigns to navigate.

A weekend morning of Florida network television was indicative of a one-two-three punch:

? First was a soft-lit spot from Americans for Prosperity in which self-described Obama voters express regret after four years. "I think that now we've given Obama a fair chance and I don't think he's able to do what we need him to do," says a woman identified as Connie.

? The pro-Romney super PAC Restore Our Future came next with an ad splicing images of Romney and Obama at debate lecterns. A narrator accuses the president of having "wasted $800 billion on a failed stimulus and the jobless rate went up" while holding up Romney as a budget balancer and job creator in the public and private sectors.

? Before the TV show resumed, a third ad, aired by Romney's campaign, portrayed the Obama health care law as having ugly side effects. "Free health care comes at a very high price," the ad ends.

It's far from one-sided. Obama's campaign has a trio of commercials in rotation:

? One argues that Romney would break a health care promise to millions of future retirees by supporting a reworking of Medicare that moves away from direct payment to doctors and toward a voucher system in which future seniors would receive subsidies to shop the market and buy health insurance.

? Another paints Romney and his running mate, Paul Ryan, as out of the mainstream over their stances on abortion and family planning funding. "For women, for president, the choice is ours," it intones.

? The third ad features former President Bill Clinton talking straight into the camera about the election as a choice between visions ? of Obama as a defender of the middle-class and, in his view, of Romney as a protector of the rich.

There's also a commercial from the pro-Obama super PAC Priorities USA that piles on by saying Romney would see his tax burden fall at the expense of everyone else if he and Ryan enact proposals the Wisconsin congressman has sponsored. "If they win, the middle class loses," the ad concludes.

The airwaves in North Carolina are just as saturated with presidential ads.

For most of August, North Carolina viewers have been inundated with political ads alternatively supporting and deriding the competing presidential candidates. Images of Obama and Romney have become more plentiful than car salesmen, although the balance lately seems to have swung more Romney's way. During a recent nightly newscast in Raleigh, two political ads supporting Romney ran during the 30-minute show.

To be sure, both sides say the opposition ads are filled with flaws and distortions. But neither appears willing to let up.

AP-GfK poll: Raise taxes to save Social Security

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Most Americans say go ahead and raise taxes if it will save Social Security benefits for future generations. And raise the retirement age, if you have to.

Both options are preferable to cutting monthly benefits, even for people who are years away from applying for them.

Those are the findings of a new Associated Press-GfK poll on public attitudes toward the nation's largest federal program.

Social Security is facing serious long-term financial problems. When given a choice on how to fix them, 53 percent of adults said they would rather raise taxes than cut benefits for future generations, according to the poll. Just 36 percent said they would cut benefits instead.

The results were similar when people were asked whether they would rather raise the retirement age or cut monthly payments for future generations ? 53 percent said they would raise the retirement age, while 35 percent said they would cut monthly payments.

"Right now, it seems like we're taxed so much, but if that would be the only way to go, I guess I'd have to be for it to preserve it," said Marge Youngs, a 77-year-old widow from Toledo, Ohio. "It's extremely important to me. It's most of my income."

Social Security is being hit by a wave of millions of retiring baby boomers, leaving relatively fewer workers to pay into the system. The trustees who oversee the massive retirement and disability program say Social Security's trust funds will run out of money in 2033. At that point, Social Security will only collect enough tax revenue to pay 75 percent of benefits, unless Congress acts.

Lawmakers from both political parties say there is a good chance Congress will address Social Security in the next year or two ? if the White House takes the lead. Yet so far, Social Security has not played a big role in the presidential election.

In previous polls, Democrats have typically scored better than Republicans on handling Social Security. But the AP-GfK poll shows Americans are closely divided on which presidential candidate they trust to handle the issue.

Forty-seven percent said they trust President Barack Obama to do a better job on Social Security, and 44 percent said they trust his Republican opponent, Mitt Romney. The difference is within the poll's margin of sampling error.

Charles McSwain, 69, of Philadelphia, said he trusts Obama because he thinks the president is more likely to stick up for the middle class.

"He at least gives the appearance of trying to help people that aren't super rich, and Romney doesn't," said McSwain, who works part time selling real estate.

But Jeff Victory of Nashville, Tenn., worries that Obama doesn't have the stomach to cut benefits to help rein in the program.

"Barack has already shown he's going to give anything free out to everyone he possibly can, so I'm going to have to go with Romney on that one," said Victory, a 26-year-old electrician.

Romney has said he favors gradually increasing the retirement age, but he opposes tax increases to shore up Social Security. For future generations, Romney would slow the growth of benefits "for those with higher incomes."

Obama hasn't laid out a detailed plan for addressing Social Security. But during the 2008 campaign, he called for applying the Social Security payroll tax to wages above $250,000. It is now limited to wages below $110,100, a level that increases with inflation.

Obama says any changes to Social Security should be done "without putting at risk current retirees, the most vulnerable or people with disabilities, without slashing benefits for future generations and without subjecting Americans' guaranteed retirement income to the whims of the stock market."

Romney's running mate, Rep. Paul Ryan of Wisconsin, has been a leading proponent in Congress of allowing workers to divert a portion of their Social Security taxes into personal investment accounts. Romney has not fully embraced the idea, but Democrats are using it to accuse Republicans of trying to privatize Social Security.

Romney put Ryan on the ticket Aug. 11. The AP-GfK Poll was conducted Aug. 16-20.

About 56 million people get Social Security benefits. Monthly payments average $1,236 for retirees.

The options for fixing Social Security fall into two broad categories ? raising taxes or cutting benefits, or some combination of the two. But there are many options within each category. For example, raising the retirement age is a benefit cut for future generations, because they would have to wait longer to qualify for full benefits.

Retirees now can qualify for full benefits at age 66, a threshold that is rising to 67 for people born in 1960 or later.

In previous polls, most of the options for addressing Social Security scored poorly among the public, which helps explain why Congress hasn't embraced them. But the AP-GfK poll forced people to make a choice: Raise taxes or cut benefits? Raise the retirement age or cut monthly payments?

Democrats, Republicans and independents all favored raising the retirement age over cutting monthly payments. But there was a big divide on raising taxes. Sixty-five percent of Democrats and 53 percent of independents supported higher taxes, compared with just 38 percent of Republicans.

"Raising taxes, especially on the people that provide the jobs for us, is not an option because what you do there, you discourage promoting jobs," said James Taylor, a 68-year-old retiree from Golden, Miss.

But Juan Tellez, a 22-year-old college student in Gainesville, Fla., said he would accept higher taxes if it means preserving benefits, even though he's not very confident Social Security will be around for his generation.

"I think of Social Security as an investment, as a public investment almost, something more communal," Tellez said. "I feel like I would want to invest in that."

About three-quarters of the public believe Social Security is an important issue, though there is no consensus about whether people will be able to rely on it throughout their retirement. Only 30 percent said it was very likely or extremely likely they will be able to rely on Social Security.

Among people younger than 35, just 20 percent believe Social Security will provide income throughout their retirement, while 55 percent of people 65 and older said the same.

"I'm not planning on it at all, honestly," said Victory, the 26-year-old electrician.

The poll involved landline and cellphone interviews with 1,006 adults nationwide. Results for the full sample have a margin of sampling error of plus or minus 3.9 percentage points.

Santa Fe Independent Film Festival Premieres NM's Bless Me Ultima

Posted by Sindicator on August 27, 2012

From the Book that was Banned, Burned and Forbidden, the New Mexico Movie Premiere of Bless Me, Ultima Opens the Santa Fe Independent Film Festival on October 17, 2012.

Santa Fe, NM (August 27, 2012) The Santa Fe Independent Film Festival is thrilled to announce its 2012 festival will open with the New Mexico premiere of Bless Me, Ultima the film based on the beloved classic, ?the book that was banned, burned, and forbidden.? Bless Me, Ultima written by treasured New Mexico author Rudolfo Anaya will kick off the fourth year of the Santa Fe Independent Film Festival on October 17th at Warehouse 21 heading up a full festival schedule over 5 days in 4 venues in downtown Santa Fe. Santa Fe IFF runs October 17th to 21st with over 75 film screenings, filmmaker workshops and after-parties. The Opening night party will be held at Zia Diner with a special menu created by local restaurateur Beth Koch based on recipes from Bless Me, Ultima. The Awards Ceremony will be on Saturday October 20th at The Lensic Performing Arts Center. This year, Santa Fe IFF inaugurates its New Mexico Tin Pie Plate Awards created by Fred Ray Lopez of santafetinworks.com to hold their signature Pie Awards homemade by the Executive Director?s Mom.

Rudolfo Anaya?s Bless Me, Ultima is a drama set in New Mexico during WWII, centered on the relationship between a young man and an elderly curandera who helps him contend with the battle between good and evil that rages in his village. Many New Mexicans can remember growing up reading this incredible book, and have long awaited the movie. Bless Me, Ultima is an award-winning classic, however, it has been controversial and has been banned in school curriculum and public libraries, as recently as this year in Arizona. FCC eyes tax on Internet serviceBy Brendan Sasso???? - 08/26/12 06:00 AM ETThe Federal Communications Commission is eyeing a proposal to tax broadband Internet service. The move would funnel money to the Connect America Fund, a subsidy the agency created last year to expand Internet access. The FCC issued a request for comments on the proposal in April. Dozens of companies and trade associations have weighed in, but the issue has largely flown under the public's radar. "If members of Congress understood that the FCC is contemplating a broadband tax, they'd sit up and take notice," said Derek Turner, research director for Free Press, a consumer advocacy group that opposes the tax.Numerous companies, including AT&T, Sprint and even Google have expressed support for the idea.Consumers already pay a fee on their landline and cellular phone bills to support the FCC's Universal Service Fund. The fund was created to ensure that everyone in the country has access to telephone service, even if they live in remote areas.Last year, the FCC overhauled a $4.5 billion portion of the Universal Service Fund and converted it into a broadband Internet subsidy, called the Connect America Fund. The new fund aims to subsidize the construction of high-speed Internet networks to the estimated 19 million Americans who currently lack access. Julius Genachowski, the FCC's chairman, has made expanding broadband access his top priority. He argues that a high-speed Internet connection is critical for succeeding in the 21st century economy and that expanding Internet access is the country's next great infrastructure challenge. But the money for the new Internet subsidy is still coming from the fees on phone bills. And in recent years, with more people sending emails instead of making long-distance phone calls, the money flowing into the program has begun to dry up. The Universal Service fee has had to grow to a larger and larger portion of phone bills to compensate. The FCC floated a number of ideas for reforming the fund's contribution system. In addition to the broadband fee, the commission also sought comments on taxing text messages, as well as levying a flat fee on each phone line, instead of the current system, which is based on a portion of the revenue from interstate phone calls. The commission only sought input on the ideas and did not indicate whether it planned to move ahead with any of them, including the broadband fee. When the FCC released its proposal, Genachowski issued a statement saying the current contribution system is outdated and full of loopholes."Today we propose three goals for contribution reform: efficiency, fairness, and sustainability," Genachowski said. "And we underscore that any reforms to the contribution system must safeguard core Commission objectives, including the promotion of broadband innovation, investment, and adoption."In its filing, Google argued that the evidence "strongly supports expanding the [Universal Service Fund] contribution base to include broadband Internet access services."According to Google, taxing broadband service is preferable to taxing the kinds of online services it offers, like email or Google Voice."Saddling these offerings with new, direct USF contribution obligations is likely to restrict innovative options for all communications consumers and cause immediate and lasting harm to the users, pioneers, and innovators of Internet-based services," Google argued. But Turner argued that imposing a fee on broadband access, even if it is only a dollar or two, would discourage many people from buying the service?the exact opposite outcome of what the FCC is trying to achieve."For folks who are thinking about adopting broadband, who have much lower incomes or don't value broadband as much?that extra dollar on the margins will cause millions of people... to not adopt," Turner said. The FCC could run into legal problems with the Internet Tax Freedom Act, a 1998 law that bans the government from taxing Internet access. But the FCC has long argued that Universal Service is a fee that the providers choose to pass on to consumers and not a tax.Turner said it is unlikely that the FCC will make any controversial moves before November's election."I don't anticipate that the chairman would move to adopt a drastic overhaul ahead of the election," he said.

    Zimbabwe conservation group: wildlife threatened

HARARE, Zimbabwe (AP) ? A consortium of wildlife ranchers says tens of thousands of animals face annihilation in a wave of land takeovers in southeastern Zimbabwe by politicians of President Robert Mugabe's party.

The Save Valley Conservancy said Sunday that thousands of people's livelihoods also are threatened in in the 1,000 square mile (2,600 square kilometer) nature preserve and surrounding districts after hunting permits and land were granted to 25 leaders of the ZANU-PF party in a black empowerment program.

In Sunday newspaper advertisements, the consortium said "greedy individuals" ? including a provincial governor and a Mugabe Cabinet minister ? had used color as "a racial tool" to collapse world-renowned wildlife conservation for short-term gain.

The group said that when humans behave like animals, people destroy not only each other but generations to come.

Neil Armstrong, 1930-2012: U.S. astronaut was first man to walk on the moon

ScienceDaily (Aug. 25, 2012) ? Neil Armstrong, the first man to walk on the moon during the 1969 Apollo 11 mission, has died, following complications resulting from cardiovascular procedures. He was 82.

Armstrong's words "That is one small step for (a) man, one giant leap for mankind," spoken on July 20, 1969, as he became the first person ever to step onto another planetary body, instantly became a part of history.

Those few words from the Sea of Tranquillity were the climactic fulfillment of the efforts and hopes of millions of people and the expenditure of billions of dollars. A plaque on one of the lander's legs that concluded "We came in peace for all mankind," further emphasized that Armstrong and fellow astronaut Edwin "Buzz" Aldrin were there as representatives of all humans.

Armstrong is survived by his wife, two sons, a stepson, a stepdaughter, 10 grandchildren, and a brother and sister.

"Neil Armstrong was a hero not just of his time, but of all time," said President Barack Obama. "Thank you, Neil, for showing us the power of one small step."

Armstrong's family released the following statement on Saturday:

"Neil Armstrong was also a reluctant American hero who always believed he was just doing his job. He served his Nation proudly, as a navy fighter pilot, test pilot, and astronaut. He also found success back home in his native Ohio in business and academia, and became a community leader in Cincinnati. ...

"While we mourn the loss of a very good man, we also celebrate his remarkable life and hope that it serves as an example to young people around the world to work hard to make their dreams come true, to be willing to explore and push the limits, and to selflessly serve a cause greater than themselves."

The family will be providing further updates at www.neilarmstronginfo.com .

"As long as there are history books, Neil Armstrong will be included in them, remembered for taking humankind's first small step on a world beyond our own," said NASA Administrator Charles Bolden.

"Besides being one of America's greatest explorers," Bolden added, "Neil carried himself with a grace and humility that was an example to us all."

Apollo 11 lunar module pilot and fellow moonwalker Buzz Aldrin on Armstrong's passing: "I am very saddened to learn of the passing of Neil Armstrong today. Neil and I trained together as technical partners but were also good friends who will always be connected through our participation in the Apollo 11 mission. Whenever I look at the moon it reminds me of the moment over four decades ago when I realized that even though we were farther away from earth than two humans had ever been, we were not alone."

Apollo 11 command module pilot Michael Collins said simply, "He was the best, and I will miss him terribly."

"The passing of Neil Armstrong has shocked all of us at the Johnson Space Center," said Center Director Michael Coats. The whole world knew Neil as the first man to step foot on the Moon, but to us he was a co-worker, a friend, and an outstanding spokesman for the Human Space Program. His quiet confidence and ability to perform under pressure set an example for all subsequent astronauts. Our role model will be missed."

"Neil Armstrong was a very personal inspiration to all of us within the astronaut office," said Bob Behnken, Chief of NASA's Astronaut Office. "His historic step onto the Moon's surface was the foundation for many of our personal dreams to become astronauts. The only thing that outshone his accomplishments was his humility about those accomplishments. We will miss him as a friend, mentor, explorer and ambassador for the American spirit of ingenuity."

Armstrong's single sentence, though it was focused above the national divisions and quarrels of Earth, still signified unquestionably the U.S. victory in the desperate space race with the Soviet Union.

Neil A. Armstrong was born Aug. 5, 1930, in Wapakoneta, Ohio. He earned an aeronautical engineering degree from Purdue University and a master's in aerospace engineering from the University of Southern California.

He was a naval aviator from 1949 to 1952. During the Korean War he flew 78 combat missions.

In 1955 he joined the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA), NASA's predecessor, as a research pilot at Lewis Laboratory in Cleveland.

Armstrong later transferred to NACA's High Speed Flight Research Station at Edwards AFB, Calif. As project pilot, he was in the forefront of the development of many high-speed aircraft, including the X-15, which flew at 4,000 mph.

He flew more than 200 aircraft models. They included jet and rocket-powered planes, helicopters and gliders.

Armstrong was selected as an astronaut in 1962.

His first space flight was Gemini 8, which he commanded. He was the first civilian to fly a U.S. spacecraft. With fellow astronaut David R. Scott, Armstrong performed the first docking in space, with an Agena target satellite.

Less than an hour later their spacecraft began an unplanned rolling motion. After undocking, it increased to one revolution per second. One of the Gemini's 16 thrusters had stuck open because of an electrical short circuit.

Armstrong used re-entry thrusters to control the capsule, and after a 30-minute struggle, it was stabilized. Flight rules required a return to Earth after use of the re-entry thrusters, so the crewmembers fired retrorockets that sent Gemini 8 to a contingency landing zone in the Western Pacific.

The eventful flight on March 16, 1966, had taken just over 10 hours, 41 minutes.

Apollo 11 lifted off on July 16, 1969, with Armstrong, Aldrin and Mike Collins aboard. Collins remained in lunar orbit in the command module while Armstrong and Aldrin descended in the lunar module they had named Eagle to their historic landing on the moon's surface.

"Houston, Tranquillity Base here. The Eagle has landed," Armstrong said, telling a tense and waiting Earth that men had finally reached the lunar surface.

He and Aldrin spent about two hours exploring, gathering more than 50 pounds of moon rocks and setting up three scientific experiments. The next day, after 21 hours and 37 minutes on the moon, they fired Eagle's engine to begin the return to Collins and the command module.

The crew returned to Earth, landing near the USS Hornet in the Pacific after a mission of just over eight days. President Richard M. Nixon was on the aircraft carrier's deck to welcome them.

"This is the greatest week in the history of the world since the creation," Nixon told the three.

After 16 days in quarantine to protect Earth from any returned moon germs, the crew went on U.S. and international tours. Millions greeted them as heroes.

Armstrong later served as deputy associate administrator for aeronautics in the Office of Advanced Research and technology at NASA Headquarters. He resigned from the space agency in 1971. As a professor at the University of Cincinnati from 1971 to 1979, he was involved in both teaching and research.

He later went into the business world. Among other positions, he served for 10 years as chairman of Computing Technologies for Aviation Inc. of Charlottesville, Va. and later as chairman of AIL Systems Inc., an electronic systems company based in Deer Park, N.Y.

Armstrong was a fellow of the Society of Experimental Test Pilots and the Royal Aeronautical Society, and an honorary fellow of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics and the International Astronautical Federation.

He was a member of the National Academy of Engineering. He served as a member of the National Commission on Space in 1985 and 1986, and in 1985 was vice chairman of the Presidential Commission on the Space Shuttle Challenger Accident. He also was chairman of the Presidential Advisory Committee for the Peace Corps from 1971 to 1973.

Seventeen countries decorated Armstrong. He received many special honors, including the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the Congressional Space Medal of Honor, NASA's Ambassador of Exploration Award, the Explorers Club Medal, the Robert H. Goddard Memorial Trophy, the NASA Distinguished Service Medal, the Harmon International Aviation Trophy, the Royal Geographic Society's Gold Medal, the Federation Aeronautique Internationale's Gold Space Medal, the American Astronautical Society Flight Achievement Award, the Robert J. Collier Trophy, the AIAA Astronautics Award, the Octave Chanute Award, and the John J. Montgomery Award.

Sensor detects glucose in saliva and tears for diabetes testing

ScienceDaily (Aug. 23, 2012) ? Researchers have created a new type of biosensor that can detect minute concentrations of glucose in saliva, tears and urine and might be manufactured at low cost because it does not require many processing steps to produce.

"It's an inherently non-invasive way to estimate glucose content in the body," said Jonathan Claussen, a former Purdue University doctoral student and now a research scientist at the U.S. Naval Research Laboratory. "Because it can detect glucose in the saliva and tears, it's a platform that might eventually help to eliminate or reduce the frequency of using pinpricks for diabetes testing. We are proving its functionality."

Claussen and Purdue doctoral student Anurag Kumar led the project, working with Timothy Fisher, a Purdue professor of mechanical engineering; D. Marshall Porterfield, a professor of agricultural and biological engineering; and other researchers at the university's Birck Nanotechnology Center.

Findings are detailed in a research paper being published this week in the journal Advanced Functional Materials.

"Most sensors typically measure glucose in blood," Claussen said. "Many in the literature aren't able to detect glucose in tears and the saliva. What's unique is that we can sense in all four different human serums: the saliva, blood, tears and urine. And that hasn't been shown before."

The paper, featured on the journal's cover, was written by Claussen, Kumar, Fisher, Porterfield and Purdue researchers David B. Jaroch, M. Haseeb Khawaja and Allison B. Hibbard.

The sensor has three main parts: layers of nanosheets resembling tiny rose petals made of a material called graphene, which is a single-atom-thick film of carbon; platinum nanoparticles; and the enzyme glucose oxidase.

Each petal contains a few layers of stacked graphene. The edges of the petals have dangling, incomplete chemical bonds, defects where platinum nanoparticles can attach. Electrodes are formed by combining the nanosheet petals and platinum nanoparticles. Then the glucose oxidase attaches to the platinum nanoparticles. The enzyme converts glucose to peroxide, which generates a signal on the electrode.

"Typically, when you want to make a nanostructured biosensor you have to use a lot of processing steps before you reach the final biosensor product," Kumar said. "That involves lithography, chemical processing, etching and other steps. The good thing about these petals is that they can be grown on just about any surface, and we don't need to use any of these steps, so it could be ideal for commercialization."

In addition to diabetes testing, the technology might be used for sensing a variety of chemical compounds to test for other medical conditions.

"Because we used the enzyme glucose oxidase in this work, it's geared for diabetes," Claussen said. "But we could just swap out that enzyme with, for example, glutemate oxidase, to measure the neurotransmitter glutamate to test for Parkinson's and Alzheimer's, or ethanol oxidase to monitor alcohol levels for a breathalyzer. It's very versatile, fast and portable."

The technology is able to detect glucose in concentrations as low as 0.3 micromolar, far more sensitive than other electrochemical biosensors based on graphene or graphite, carbon nanotubes and metallic nanoparticles, Claussen said

"These are the first findings to report such a low sensing limit and, at the same time, such a wide sensing range," he said.

The sensor is able to distinguish between glucose and signals from other compounds that often cause interference in sensors: uric acid, ascorbic acid and acetaminophen, which are commonly found in the blood. Unlike glucose, those compounds are said to be electroactive, which means they generate an electrical signal without the presence of an enzyme.

Glucose by itself doesn't generate a signal but must first react with the enzyme glucose oxidase. Glucose oxidase is used in commercial diabetes test strips for conventional diabetes meters that measure glucose with a finger pinprick.

The research has been based at the Birck Nanotechnology Center.

The research has been funded by the U.S. Office of Naval Research and the National Science Foundation.
