Blog Archive ? Smart Techniques for Online Job Search

As a follow-up to the Call 12 to Action investigation featured in the Arizona Republic business section on May 13, 2012 called?Be Wary of Some Online Job Offers?I was part of an online discussion with journalist Robert Anglen and local job seekers yesterday. We covered a wide variety of topics some of which I wanted to highlight for you:

  1. Online application requires Social Security Number (SSN) for submission: Never give your social security number on an application. There is not requirement by law. Not only is this a red flag about the company, you could potentially be giving personal information to a scammer who isn?t even a recruiter! A legitimate company will not even ask for your SSN until much later in the hiring process. Try entering all zeroes or ones rather than your SSN if you have confirmed you are applying for a legitimate job at a legitimate company. Always be careful with personal information.
  2. Accounting for Gaps in Employment: Volunteering and/or consulting are great ways to not only to keep your ?mental muscle? flexed but also provide valid positions for your otherwise blank job history. Your ?employer? is the organization for which you worked and the ?position? is the title of your volunteer position. Consulting is also a great way for retirees to continue working on a part-time level.
  3. Job Market in Phoenix Area: The job market is improving as evidenced by the number of hiring companies at Career Connectors events. When we started the program in 2009 we had difficulty finding companies who were hiring to come to our events. We now have 2-3 different hiring companies at each of our six events per month. We are also in need of volunteers at Career Connectors?which tells us people are landing new jobs.
  4. Need some help with LinkedIn: LinkedIn is an online resume and recommendation website for career oriented individuals. It is powerful for job seekers who can connect with employees and hiring managers at companies where they want to work. We?re finding many job seekers are landing through recruitment from LinkedIn and through networking events such as Career Connectors. Workforce Connections and Career Connectors?are two local and FREE resources for job seekers looking to learn more about LinkedIn and a variety of other career related topics.
  5. Resume Template/Examples: CareerBuilder.com is a great resume template resource. Career Connectors has members of the Resume Writers Council of Arizona at each of our six monthly events.

I am praying for you to land the career of your dreams!
