OECD chief: Fight complacency on fixing economies

DAVOS, Switzerland (AP) ? One economic expert at Davos says there's no rest for the weary: governments must not back off from making unpopular reforms that will help their economies grow faster.

Angel Gurria, secretary-general of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development, says "we have to keep fighting, keep pedaling" to improve educational opportunities, labor laws and tax codes to promote long-term growth.

Central banks already have cut interest rates as much as they can and governments can't afford more stimulus spending as they try to reduce debts, Gurria told The Associated Press on Saturday at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland.

He said the key now was to focus on structural reforms that will make countries' economies and labor markets more competitive.

"This incipient, hesitant recovery needs to be consolidated," Gurria said. "We ran out of room on the monetary side, we've run out of room on the fiscal policy side, so what you need is to go structural. "

"You need to go for education, for innovation, for more competition, for tax structures that are conducive to investments and job creation, you need to go for flexibility in the labor markets, for flexibility in the product markets," he said. "These are the things that are going to keep you going long term."

The OECD is a group of 34 countries that seeks to promote global economic development. It is mostly made up of advanced economies such as the U.S., Britain, Germany and Japan, but also includes emerging economies like Chile, Mexico and Turkey.

Twin Otter aircraft was en route from NSF's South Pole Station to Italian Research Station

Officials with the U.S. Antarctic Program are cooperating with their Italian and New Zealand counterparts, as well as the Rescue Coordination Centre in Wellington, NZ, in a search-and-rescue effort to locate a propeller-driven aircraft that is believed to have crashed in a remote and mountainous part of Antarctica.

A three-person crew is believed to have been aboard the de Havilland Twin Otter when contact was lost with the plane in the early morning hours of Jan. 23, Eastern Standard Time (U.S. stations in Antarctica keep New Zealand time). The nationalities of the crew are unconfirmed at this point.

The missing plane was flying in support of the Italian Antarctic Program under the logistical responsibility of the Italian National Agency for New Technologies, Energy and Sustainable Economic Development (ENEA), and was en route from NSF's Amundsen-Scott South Pole Station to the Italian research station at Terra Nova Bay when contact was lost with the aircraft in a remote region of the Transantarctic Mountains.

The aircraft is owned and operated by Kenn Borek Air Ltd., a Canadian firm headquartered in Calgary that charters aircraft to the U.S. program.

Communications between U.S. officials at McMurdo Station in Antarctica and the New Zealand Rescue Coordination Centre confirmed that an emergency locator beacon had been activated.

Officials are monitoring conditions at the site, where the weather is currently very poor, to decide when to launch a search of the area and what kind of aircraft to use.

Chely Wright's 'Wish Me Away' Nominated for GLAAD Award

Wish Me Away
Wish Me Away

Chely Wright?s 2012 documentary ?Wish Me Away? has been nominated for a GLAAD Award for its outstanding representation of the gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender community.

?Wish Me Away? chronicles the coming out process experienced by Wright as a country music recording artist. The advocate?s career is certainly thriving now, but the ?Single White Female? singer says that her lifestyle as an openly lesbian woman has tarnished some of the relationships she had in the country music industry.

?It?s not my belief that I should be performing on every awards show ? Now it?s the new Taylor Swift and Carrie Underwood and Lady Antebellum, that?s a natural part of entertainment,? shares Wright. ?(But) there?s an institutionalized friendship within country music, once you?re in, once you?re one of us, you?re always invited to certain things to present or be a part of it or chair a committee for the Country Music Hall of Fame, which I used to do things like that.?

?I need a country artist who is a big deal, like Jay-Z in his community ? he came forward and said, ?I believe in equality for all.? I?m struggling because I have not heard that from the big stars in country music,? Wright adds.

The singer-turned-advocate may not find the support she needs in the genre, but Wright does have support in her wife, Lauren Blitzer, who is also a GLBT Civil Rights activist. The ladies were married in a private ceremony in Conneticut in August 2011. Now, the couple is expecting identical twins.

?I?m trying to work on those things and to use my voice to make sure that everyone out there in America knows, you do love a gay person,? Wright says of her mission. ?It may not be me, but I promise you, you have a neighbor, a coworker, a niece, and be mindful of the negative things you say about gays and lesbians because someone is listening.?

?Wish Me Away? has already won a handful of awards, including the 2012 Nashville Film Festival Audience Award winner for Best Documentary. ?Wish Me Away? is now available for download through iTunes or purchased via Video on Demand (VOD) from local cable carriers.

Skype prodded by privacy groups over transparency

7 hrs.

As Skype becomes more and more integrated with Microsoft's other products, privacy advocates around the world have asked it and its parent company to come clean on how, when and why the widely used?video chatting program?complies with government requests for information.

The request comes in the form of an open letter?Thursday,?addressed to Skype's president and Microsoft's chief privacy officer and general counsel, and ?is?signed by dozens of?organizations, including?the Electronic Frontier Foundation and Digital Rights Foundation.

People all over the world use Skype, including not just distant friends and family members, but journalists and activists for whom the secure and private chat platform is indispensable, the organizations say. And since Skype's takeover, there hasn't been a clear line on whether the service would remain that way.

Since 2011, when Microsoft purchased Skype for $8.5 billion, there have been relatively few bugs and breaches in the service. But at the same time, no information has been publicized that details what information Skype?collects, how it protects it, and with whom that information is shared.

In the letter, the signers ask for regular reports, like those put out by Google and Twitter, describing requests for information made by the government or private individuals. Details on what information is vulnerable to (or protected from) network providers and hackers are also suggested, and a statement on how Skype plans to cooperate with certain information-collection and wiretapping laws in the U.S. and China.

A Microsoft spokesperson declined to address the questions of the letter specifically, but offered the following statement to NBC News:

We are reviewing the letter. Microsoft has an ongoing commitment to collaborate with advocates, industry partners and governments worldwide to develop solutions and promote effective public policies that help protect people's online safety and privacy.

The letter can be read in its entirety here; references and links are at the bottom of the page.

Starchy Diets May Have Given Ancient Dogs a Paw Up

Dogs may have become man's best friend thanks, in part, to their ability to stomach a starchy diet.

According to new genetic research, domestic dogs' genomes better equip them to handle starches than wolves. Domestic dogs also show differences from wolves in portions of the genome linked to brain development, perhaps hinting at behavioral changes that occurred as canines became less wild.

The findings are particularly fascinating given that humans who live off farmed foods show similar genetic changes as dogs compared with humans who survive mostly by hunting and gathering, said study researcher Erik Axelsson of the department of medical biochemistry and microbiology at Uppsala University in Sweden.

"It's cool that we've shared an environment for such a long time and we've eaten the same kind of food for such a long time, that we have started to become more similar in that way," Axelsson told LiveScience. [10 Things You Didn't Know About Dogs]

The DNA of domestication

Dogs have been intertwined with humans for thousands of years, but no one is sure how far back the bond stretches. Humans were buried with dogs some time between about 11,000 and 12,000 years ago in Israel, perhaps the oldest agreed-upon archaeological evidence for domestication, though the remains of a possible domestic dog dating back 33,000 years were uncovered in 2012 in a cave in Siberia.

Understanding domestication is interesting in its own right, Axelsson said, but comparing wild and domesticated animals can also help researchers track down the functions of individual genes that change during the domestication process. The results may even affect research on human health. In the case of dog diet, for example, canines might be a good model for human diabetes. Dogs are already treated for cancer with experimental drugs that might someday help humans.

Axelsson and his colleagues analyzed the entire genetic codes of 12 wolves from ?across the globe, as well as the genomes of 60 individual domestic dogs from 14 different breeds. They pooled the domestic pups' results so that the genetic traits of individual breeds wouldn't skew the findings and then compared the pet dogs to the wolves, looking for places where the genomes diverged.

This game of "spot the differences" led the scientists to focus on 36 different regions. They found that 19 of these regions contained genes crucial for brain functioning, including eight important for the development of the nervous system.

It was no surprise to see differences in brain genetics, Axelsson said, given that dogs had to modify their behavior to fit into human society. What did surprise the researchers, however, were 10 regions held genes involved with diet, specifically the breakdown of starches. Humans are well-equipped for starchy diets: Human saliva contains an enzyme called amylase, which starts breaking down starches as soon as food hits the mouth. Dog drool doesn't have this advantage, but dogs do excrete amylase from their pancreases, allowing for the digestion of starches in the gut.

The researchers found that dogs have more copies of a gene called AMY2B, crucial for amylase production, than wolves. And in dogs, this gene is 28 times more active in the pancreas than in wolves.

Dogs also showed changes in specific genes that allow for the breakdown of maltose into glucose, another key starch digestion step, and in genes allowing for the body to make use of this glucose.

How did wolves become dogs?

The findings can't pin down exact dates for dog domestication, but they do lend weight to one hypothesis, which is that wolves were drawn to early human settlements in order to scavenge at waste dumps, Axelsson said. Theorists have speculated that wolves that were less shy would have had an advantage, as they wouldn't have run when humans were around. The proximity could have been the first step in domestication.

"We think that our results regarding starch digestion fit really neatly with that idea," Axelsson said. "Being an efficient scavenger didn't only take a special type of behavior but also a digestive system that could cope with the food that was present at the dump."

The researchers are trying to pinpoint in more detail when the starch gene changes occurred. They're also taking a closer look at the behavioral genes that differ between dogs and wolves.

"Now we're also trying to take the behavioral side of the story further to try to pinpoint the genes, the individual mutations, to understand exactly how they might have changed the dog brain and dog behavior," Axelsson said.

The researchers report their results Thursday (Jan. 24) in the journal Nature.

Will International Business Machines Corp (IBM) Earnings Move the ...

With dozens of companies having already reported quarterly results, we're now in the heart of earnings season. The key to making smart investment decisions with stocks releasing their quarterly reports is to anticipate how they'll do before they announce results, leaving you fully prepared to respond quickly to whatever inevitable surprises arise. That way, you'll be less likely to make an uninformed, knee-jerk decision.

The Top 4 Tech Stocks to Own in 2013Let's turn to International Business Machines Corp. (NYSE:IBM) . With its gain of 6% in 2012, the tech giant wasn't able to match the total return of the Dow Jones Industrials . But with several positive trends taking hold in tech, can IBM bounce back and produce better results for shareholders? Let's take an early look at what's been happening with IBM's over the past quarter and what we're likely to see in its quarterly report next Tuesday afternoon.

Stats on IBM

Analyst EPS Estimate $5.25
Change From Year-Ago EPS 11.5%
Revenue Estimate $29.12 billion
Change From Year-Ago Revenue (1.2%)
Earnings Beats in Past 4 Quarters 4

Source: Yahoo Finance.

Will IBM move the markets? IBM is one of the few stocks for which analysts have stayed comfortable with their earnings estimates. Despite falling revenue during 2012, the company was able to beat earnings estimates consistently, and the stock has been essentially unchanged since the roughly 8% plunge that followed its previous quarterly report.

Perhaps the biggest trend that IBM has been a part of is the quest to make profitable use of "big data." The concept refers to the massive collection of information that goes on every day, and IBM recently said that it would open a big data center, collaborating with Ohio State University. Other companies, however, are seeking to make use of big data, with Intel Corporation (NASDAQ:INTC) looking to bolster its presence in the server market while EMC Corporation?(NYSE:EMC) looks for ways to produce what it calls "agile analytics" and "actionable insights." Given IBM's superior reach into its wide array of enterprise customers, it'll be tough for Intel, EMC, and other potential competitors to stand up to Big Blue.

From a broader perspective, in interpreting IBM's earnings, keep in mind that the company has a long-term goal of hitting earnings per share of $20 by 2015. As a result, the company isn't focused as much on quarterly results as it might otherwise be, instead keeping one eye on the long-term prize. That's the true motivation behind big data, as well as other cloud-computing offerings designed to boost margins and avoid the overreliance on commoditized products that has brought down some of its rivals.

While most investors will focus on headline numbers and look for immediate guidance on IBM's future, you should take a step back and view the report and conference call as opportunities to see where IBM is going in the long run. That way, you'll have a better chance of deciding whether IBM can meet its long-term goals and bring the attendant share-price gains to its investors.

EE closing 78 overly cozy stores, keeps related staff

EE closing 78 overly close stores, keeps related staff

Merging two carriers' efforts invariably creates at least some kind of redundancy, no matter how much the two sides try to avoid it. In EE's case, it led to stores that were suddenly too close to each other -- so close that some were very literally next door. Rather than perpetuate the inadvertent comedy, EE says it's shuttering 78 stores that it believes are just wasting space. The provider doesn't want to put added strain on the remaining shops, however. It plans to move all affected staff to existing locations, and it's hoping to repurpose managers rather than oust them. The scaled-back retail operations theoretically "maintain momentum" while keeping customers and workers happy, EE tells us. When we see genuinely absurd situations like the photo above, we're inclined to agree.

Dunkin? Donuts Will Return To California In 2015

Considering the number of large cities and college campuses, it?s surprising that you won?t find a single Dunkin? Donuts in the entire state of California. That was not always the case as Dunkin? Donuts did have locations in California until 2002, when its final store in Sacrtamento closed,?reports Reuters.?

While there are plenty of dedicated fans of Dunkin? Donuts? coffee, and the chain?has as much of a presence as Starbucks in many East Coast cities, it was not able to stick in California. That will change in the near future as the company announced plans to re-enter California in 2015 on Wednesday.

In a statement, Dunkin? Donuts announced the plans to expand to California with the opening of 150 locations in 2015 throughout Southern California, including Los Angeles, Riverside, San Diego, San Bernardino, Ventura and Orange counties, ending a 13-year absence from the state.

It seems?there will always be a market for coffee, and Dunkin? Donuts is a popular brand that could appeal to people looking for an affordable cup of coffee or an alternative to Starbucks. In fact, Dunkin? Donuts is already popular in California as the company reports that the state is number one for sales of its brand of bagged coffee, reports Reuters.

The return to California marks a change in policy for Dunkin? Donuts. Since 2002, the company has changed hands and has gone public and has steadily rolled out expansion plans, reports Reuters.

Nigel Travis, CEO of?Dunkin? Brands and president of?Dunkin? Donuts U.S., said, ?This past year was an exciting one for Dunkin? Donuts? growth in the United States, and we are delighted to begin 2013 with the long-awaited announcement that Dunkin? Donuts will be opening restaurants in California, where there is already incredible passion for our brand.?

Dunkin? Donuts is not just dipping its toe in California and has big plans for the state. According to Travis, ?We eventually plan to have more than 1,000 restaurants throughout the state,? reports Reuters. There are approximately 7,200 Dunkin? Donuts locations in America, notes Reuters, and the company will face some stiff competition in the state, including Starbucks, McDonald?s, Peet's Coffee & Tea and Winchell's Donut House.

Tractor Safety Crucial Given Recent Deaths

Two workplace deaths late last year involving tractors has prompted the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment to remind farmers of the importance of keeping themselves safe.

In the last two months two farmers died while operating tractors in the South Island.

?Farm vehicles were involved in nearly three quarters of all agriculture deaths between 2003 and 2008,? says the Ministry?s Southern Division General Manager, Francois Barton.

?These two recent deaths, coupled with three others involving farm tractors in 2012, are a tragic reminder of the importance of keeping yourself safe,? he says.

?This is especially important in summer when farmers tend to work longer hours due to daylight saving and the hay making season.

?Before setting out in the tractor farmers should be checking the condition of the vehicle, and consider whether the tractor is the best vehicle for the job. If it is, it should be used within the operating guidelines.

?We strongly advise farmers to wear seatbelts while driving and operating tractors. If they?re operating an older vehicle, they should seriously consider fitting seatbelts and roll protection devices. Otherwise they are putting themselves at serious risk.?

As an employer, farmers have a responsibility to keep themselves and their workers safe.

?Farmers need to ensure their staff are trained and experienced in driving and operating tractors, before they are allowed to use the vehicle. Otherwise they can risk injury, or death,? says Mr Barton.

Agriculture safety is a focus for the Ministry. Last year it launched the Agriculture Sector Action Plan which sets out a range of actions for Government and the sector to work towards to reduce the high rate of fatalities and injuries.

The Action Plan includes initiatives for industry-run training and license initiatives for tractors.

Real Politix ? What To Do When You're Buying Real Estate

TIP! The current economic climate makes now an ideal time to consider investing in real estate. Property values are low due to a recent fall in the housing market.

If you dream of owning your own home, you should know that there hasn?t ever been a better time to do it. The market is highly profitable right now given such low interest rates, offering investors the chance to get in with a relatively small investment. The following article will enable you to track down real estate that fits your budget and your goals.

TIP! If you are thinking about moving, you may want to research the neighborhoods of properties you are interested in online. There is a wealth of information available on the Internet, even for small cities and towns.

Buy the home you really want. While many investors will tell you that now is not the time to sell and buy a larger home, others disagree. This may be the best time to buy your dream property because housing prices are expected to rise.

TIP! Do a thorough record check before purchasing rental properties. If you are thinking about buying rental property, hold off on purchasing it until all records have been reviewed for at minimum the past 24 months.

When buying a house, make sure you understand your options when it comes to the term of your loan. When you understand how your mortgage term affects your monthly payments, and how it will impact the total cost of your loan, you will minimize any future confusion.

TIP! If you have sufficient funds, avoid purchasing a house that is in front of or behind a busy road. These properties are typically cheaper than homes in the middle, and you might be tempted to buy one of them; however, there is a reason why they are cheaper.

Before you move in your furniture and family and start turning your new house into a home, you should first purchase insurance. If you put this off your insurance will not cover anything that happens, disaster can happen at any time!

TIP! A good real estate agent is an advantage. You can find information about the real estate agent by checking with the BBB (Better Business Bureau) and also through good sources on the Internet.

When deciding on an agent, it is important to have a list of questions already planned out. Ask them about their techniques and the kind of results they usually get, and how familiar they are with the area you are looking at. A good agent will be able to answer all your questions.

TIP! Generally, properties that are in need of multiple upgrades or repairs carry a lower price tag. This saves you money on your purchase, allowing you to invest extra capital into fixing your home at your own pace.

Build a large network of fellow real estate investors. Properties are always on the market, but many investors are only interested in certain kinds of properties. Remaining social can lead to other investors revealing properties that weren?t suitable for them, but are perfect for your needs.

TIP! As a prospective home buyer, you should keep in mind that you aren?t buying a house for the decor. Your decision as to whether you will purchase a home should be based on the quality of its build and your requirements for sizing.

If you are in the process of a real estate purchase negotiation, it is vital to make a list of your goals and keep them listed in order of priority. Look at all of the issues involved, and determine your expectations for every one of them. As you assess your highest priorities, you will know where to concentrate your energy in negotiations. Remember to approach the negotiation process with a flexible mindset. You can?t get everything on your list so concentrate on the true priorities.

TIP! If you are considering purchasing a house that has a view, avoid paying high premiums for view lots. Even if you love the view, and you want to sell it later on, the buyer might not agree.

Be flexible about the choices you have to make. Sometimes you must choose between two major features if the price of having both falls outside of your price range. If you are unable to find the home you want in the desired area, modify your search in either location or type of home.

TIP! A mortgage calculator can help you to determine if a home is in your budget. The online calculators will ask for a variety of information about your earnings, your debt and how much you have saved for a down payment in order to calculate the amount of money you can afford to pay for a home.

Measure any home that you are think of buying before making an offer. Ensure that the square foot measurements on the owners? listing matches the number you calculate. The actual square footage and the footage on public record should stay no more than 100 feet of one another. When the two measurements are more drastic than that, you might want to rethink your decision to buy. At the very least, you must figure out why the discrepancy exists.

TIP! When making your offer on a house you are interested in, it is possible to ask the seller to help with closing costs or provide other financial incentives. For example, you might request that the seller buy down the rate of interest for a couple of years.

Each real estate agent needs to contact their former clients around the holidays or their purchase date anniversaries. Receiving correspondence from you is likely to prompt memories of the good experience they had when you assisted them with their real estate transaction. When a friend, neighbor or family member needs a real estate agent, your name will be fresh in their minds and they will suggest using you.

TIP! Closely track pre-foreclosure properties. If you can allow the time required to find investment properties, properties which are in pre-foreclosure may be an excellent investment choice for you.

Those who are wise and jump into this swirling market should follow the above article closely. It will help you avoid trouble and walk away with real estate that is under-priced and growing constantly in value. The key is to purchase the property and hold until the time is right before you make your big move.

Samsung: 100M Galaxy S Phones In Channel

10 Essential Android Apps For Work, Home

(click image for larger view and for slideshow) Samsung today announced that it has pushed 100 million Galaxy S devices into the channel. That total includes shipments of the Galaxy S, the Galaxy S II, and the Galaxy S III. Actual sales to consumers are unknown but obviously number in the many tens of millions.

According to Samsung, the original Galaxy S smartphone, which was released in April 2010, shipped a total of 24 million units. It reached the 10 million mark in about seven months.

The Galaxy S II, which arrived in April 2011, shipped a total of 40 million units. It reached the 10 million unit mark in five months, selling at a faster rate than the original Galaxy S. The S II was very much like its predecessor, however, in terms of looks, features, and functionality.

[ Samsung has killed plans to launch a Windows RT-based tablet in the U.S. Read more at Samsung Nixes Windows RT Tablet For U.S. ]

The Galaxy S III, which went on sale in May of this year, reflected a dramatic overhaul of the design and the software. Samsung has shipped more than 40 million of them so far. The device reached the 20 million unit mark in just 100 days, making it the fastest-selling Samsung smartphone so far.

There's no doubt Samsung's Galaxy S-branded smartphones have been popular. The S III is one of the best-selling smartphones of 2012, which was made clear based on the number of S IIIs I saw in the hands of Consumer Electronics Show attendees last week. It has a massive 4.8-inch display, 8-megapixel camera, powerful processor, and tons of custom software.

Part of the device's success is its ubiquity. It is sold by nearly every carrier in the U.S., and many more worldwide. It is priced to compete with the Apple iPhone 5 at $199 with a contract.

Samsung is expected to debut the Galaxy S IV later this year, and reports about its features are already hitting the Web. Many believe it will feature a 5-inch screen with a full 1920 x 1080 pixels, one of Samsung's newer Exynos processors, and of course support for 4G networks. Don't look for it to appear at Mobile World Congress, however. Samsung will likely introduce it at a stand-alone event later this spring.

Frankly, I will be more interested to hear how many Galaxy Note IIs Samsung is able to sell. The world's leading phablet is a handful, but has been a strong seller so far. Can it garner the same level of success as Samsung's more mainstream S III?

Google Real Estate Part 1: The Power of Local

local-google-real-estate-related-searches-nar-google-real-estate-housing-technology-internet-listings

Last week, we reported on a rather startling statistic ? that real estate-related searches on Google had increased by 253 percent from 2008 to the present day.

No doubt that?s an important stat, one that plainly demonstrates the overwhelming growth that e-commerce has undergone the last four years; yet, we couldn?t help but feel that the stat sold short the report it was featured in, which was titled? The Digital House Hunt: Consumer and Market Trends in Real Estate?and featured dozens of fascinating findings from a collaborative study by Google and the National Association of Realtors. So, over the next couple weeks, we?ll be spotlighting the many findings of that study, all with the intent of showing you how real estate and tech ? what we?re calling Google real estate ? can benefit your business.

Google Real Estate: The Power of Local

It?s no mystery that the Internet is an extremely popular tool for home shoppers, and NAR?s study with Google only confirmed that relationship. Nine out of 10 of today?s homebuyers rely on the Web as their primary research source, and 52 percent use the Internet as their first step in the homebuying process. Furthermore, real estate-related searches on Google were up 22 percent from 2011 to 2012, and such searches on mobile devices were up 120 percent in the same period.

But what do these searches inspire? And what is their content? Here?s what Google and NAR found:

  • Internet shoppers perform an average of 11 searches before taking action on what the study called a ?real estate brand website,? or a site for an agent and/or brokerage.
  • Interestingly, the process of searching on the Internet made a prospective homebuyer more keen to take action ? the study found that shoppers who use search engines are 9 percent more likely to take action on a real estate website than those that don?t.
  • Here?s where it gets really interesting, though ? 69 percent of those Internet shoppers who took action on a real estate website did so after conducting a local real estate search; so, they searched ?Chicago real estate,? or ?Old Town real estate,? or ?Oak Park real estate,? not merely ?homes for sale.?
  • And finally, 52 percent of the actions monitored on real estate sites came directly from a local real estate search.

In the end, it all comes back to what we wrote about before regarding Google searches: if you want to be seen on Google, it all comes down to content that is local, more local and the most local.

'Les Miserables' Best Picture, Musical Or Comedy Winner At 2013 Golden Globes

Remember when Jennifer Lawrence said "I beat Meryl" and everyone thought she was slamming Meryl Streep and not referencing "First Wives Club."

Some stars didn't make the best-dressed list. From HuffPost Style:

The 2013 Golden Globes took place on Sunday night in Los Angeles, and true to form, brought out the very best in fashion and style. As it happens, they also brought out the worst in red carpet dresses, from misplaced cutouts to heavy fabric to frocks that don't belong at a prestigious awards ceremony.

From the red carpet, some of the Golden Globes best-dressed celebrities. Via HuffPost Style.

The 2013 Golden Globes had us jumping for joy. Not because some of our favorite TV shows and movies won (yay, "Homeland"), but because actresses took style chances on the red carpet this year, making for an interesting awards show (and an amazing best-dressed list).

Tina Fey and Amy Poehler say goodnight.

"Argo" beats "Lincoln," "Zero Dark Thirty," "Django Unchained" and "Life of Pi." Can it win the Oscar?

Julia Roberts is here to end this shindig by handing out the Best Motion Picture, Drama award.

That was a fun 20 minutes. More on the controversy here.

They're playing off Daniel Day-Lewis right now. Get worse, Golden Globes.

More on Daniel Day-Lewis' Best Actor win here. Now, now, now, the dude is spry.

Daniel Day-Lewis beat Denzel Washington, Richard Gere, Joaquin Phoenix and John Hawkes for Best Actor in a Motion Picture Drama.

"Are you sure there's room for another ex-president on the stage?" Day-Lewis says.

It's Jennifer Lawrence vs. Jessica Chastain at the Academy Awards. Who you got?

More on Chastain's win here. She compared her character, Maya, to director Kathryn Bigelow.

Chastain wins for "Zero Dark Thirty." She beats Helen Mirren, Marion Cotillard, Naomi Watts, Rachel Weisz.

"Les Miserables" beat "Silver Linings Playbook," an upset, of sorts, considering the power Harvey Weinstein usually has at the Golden Globes. More on the "Les Mis" win here.

Can you hear the people sing? "Les Miserables" wins Best Musical or Comedy from the Golden Globes, beating "Silver Linings Playbook," "Moonrise Kingdom," "Best Exotic Marigold Hotel" and "Salmon Fishing in the Yemen."

More on Jackman's Best Actor win. Will he beat Daniel Day-Lewis at the Academy Awards on Feb. 24? (Probably not.)

First time Tom Hooper has been called a visionary.

Suddenly, 24601, wins Best Actor in a Musical or Comedy. Hugh Jackman defeats Bradley Cooper, Bill Murray, Jack Black and Ewan McGregor.

Because Ben Affleck forgot to when he won Best Director for "Argo."

The S&P 500 was little changed Friday, and gained 5 points in the week to close at 1,472.05. The index is a fraction below its close of 1,472.12 Thursday, its highest level since December 2007.

The Dow Jones industrial average rose 17.21 points to 13,488.43. The Nasdaq composite index rose 3.88 to 3,125.63. For the week, the Dow rose 53 and the Nasdaq rose 24.

Companies have started to report earnings for the fourth quarter of 2012, but no clear pattern has emerged as yet.

Aluminum company Alcoa gave?stocks?a lift after it reported earnings late Tuesday that matched analysts' expectations and said that demand was increasing. Investors were unimpressed by Wells Fargo's record profits Friday, choosing instead to focus on the sustainability of those earnings.

"You've been hearing comments that earnings season is going to show a continued contraction in the rate of growth," said Robert Pavlik of Banyan Partners. "People are conflicted, they are worried, but at the same time they don't want to be missing out on the action in the overall market."

Currently, analysts expect fourth quarter earnings for S&P 500 companies to grow at a rate of 3.3 percent, according to the latest data from S&P Capital IQ. That's a better growth rate than the previous quarter, but it's considerably weaker that the 8.4 percent growth rate recorded in the same period last year.

Wells Fargo, the first major bank to report earnings, dropped even after the bank reported a 25 percent increase in fourth-quarter earnings. The bank's?stock?fell 30 cents, or 0.8 percent, to $35.10.

JPMorgan Chase, Goldman Sachs, U.S. Bancorp, Citigroup and Bank of America are among banks and financial companies reporting earnings next week. Financial?stocks?were the best performing industry group in the S&P 500 last year, gaining 26 percent. Other companies reporting earnings next week include eBay and Intel.

Boeing fell $1.93, or 2.5 percent, to $75.16 after the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration said it is launching a comprehensive review of the critical systems of Boeing's 787, the aircraft maker's newest and most technologically advanced plane, after a fire and a fuel leak earlier this week.

The?stock?market got a boost Thursday from reports suggesting the outlook for economic growth may be improving both in Europe and China.

Stocks?are up on the year after lawmakers came up with a last-minute deal to prevent the U.S. from going over the "fiscal cliff." That averted the threat of a series of tax hikes and spending cuts Jan. 1 that economists say would almost certainly have pushed the U.S. economy into recession.

Avoiding the "cliff" will likely have boosted consumer confidence, said Chris Kichurchak, vice president at Strategic Wealth Partners. That improving sentiment, combined with a strengthening housing market, should prove favorable to so-called cyclical companies that move in line with the economy.

"There are a lot of people who were holding out on spending," before a budget deal was struck, said Kichurchak.

Investors started the year by jumping into?stocks, according to Bank of America Merrill Lynch research. Just over $22 billion was invested in equities in the first full week of this year, the second-highest weekly in-flow on record after the $22.8 billion that was invested in September 2007.

The yield on the 10-year Treasury note, which moves opposite to the security's price, fell 4 basis points to 1.86 percent.

Other?stocks?making big moves;

? American Express rose 45 cents, or 0.7 percent, to $61.24 after the company said that spending by cardholders jumped 8 percent in the fourth quarter, even after Superstorm Sandy crimped some buying.

? Best Buy jumped $2, or 16.4 percent, to $14.21 after the struggling consumer electronics chain reported holiday sales. The company's U.S. performance was flat and, while this was a hair below the 0.3 percent increase that Best Buy reported in the prior-year period, it was an improvement over the past several quarters.

? Ford rose 17 cents, or 1.2 percent, to $14. The company said demand for new vehicles is accelerating in the U.S. Ford plans to hire 2,200 engineers, computer programmers and other white-collar workers this year. The automaker said Thursday it was raising its dividend.

? Corning fell 19 cents, or 1.5 percent, to $12.45 after Goldman Sachs removed cut its rating on the specialty glass manufacturer to "neutral" from "buy," saying that it expected first quarter sales to decline more than previously expected.

Pippa Bag mania: 100 Indians hired to meet demand after she sports ?195 holdall at every possibly opportunity (in return for four freebies)

In the bag: Pippa Middleton carries a taupe version of the bag out the day after her sister's wedding

Pippa Middleton ? like most girls ? is rarely seen without her favourite style of handbag.

But her love of the ?195 Modalu grab bag is more than just a fashion statement. For its makers, it has brought a financial windfall, with sales of the design exploding fiftyfold since the Duchess of Cambridge's sister started carrying one.

Unsurprisingly, the once-small Surrey company renamed its best-seller in her honour, and now employs 100 people in its Indian factory just to keep up with the demand.

This all stems from the sort of endorsement money cannot buy... yet Modalu has no formal agreement with Pippa. All it had to do? to secure countless photographs of its product across the media was send her four freebies, custom-made in tan, mock croc, black and oyster, each with her name discreetly embossed on the back.

Miss Middleton was so delighted with her gifts that she is believed to have sent a handwritten note as a thank you.

Modalu's managing director Mike Hiscock, 49, last night revealed that they had to build new premises at their factory in Chennai, South-East India, to cope with demand. It now employs 250 people, 100 dedicated to the Pippa range.

He said: 'I've been in the business for 25 years and I've not seen anything like the explosion that Pippa carrying our bag had on the market.

'Within 24 hours, our switchboards were jammed with people wanting to know where they could get their hands on one. Sales went up from ?10,000 a month to ?500,000.'

The company is not shy about using the Pippa Factor to sell its products. She is pictured with the bags on its website, which boasts: 'Pippa Middleton has a number of different colours of our bestselling Pippa bag.'

Such is the success that the company has expanded its Pippa range to include ?159 shoulder bags, ?75 wristlets and ?69 wallets, which sold out over Christmas.

'The whole Modalu brand is now anticipated to have an annual turnover of ?11?million, compared with ?1?million before the Royal Wedding,' Mr Hiscock says.

?

'Frankly, we could not have bought the kind of publicity she's given us.? It was because she liked the product. We've not paid her a penny to endorse it, but sent her four custom-made versions.

'Obviously we would love to have her as a brand ambassador, but no approach has been made because of her Royal connection. We would not want to do anything to cause her? any embarrassment.'

He added that they had not sent any bags to the Duchess of Cambridge or her mother. Nonetheless, Carole was pictured with her own Pippa bag when she attended the unveiling of Kate's first official portrait last week.

Pippa was first spotted with a shark-coloured Modalu bag when she emerged from a hotel the morning after her sister's wedding and interest boomed, particularly from America.

Lucy Rome, brand manager, said: 'We had interest from around the world, but particularly from America. We just couldn't make them? fast enough.

'For a while there was a huge waiting list for the shark and tan version. Our factory had to work round the clock to produce enough. We renamed it the Pippa because that's what people started to ask for.'

In having a handbag named after her, Pippa joins an elite club of timeless style icons that includes Jane Birkin, Grace Kelly, Greta Garbo and, erm, Alexa Chung ? who is said to earn up to ?80,000 a year to promote Mulberry bags.
