#Leaving: Chris Messina exits Google for NeonMob's digital art platform

DNP #leaving The creator of the hashtag exits Google for NeonMob's digital art collecting

If it weren't for Chris Messina, #FirstWorldProblems wouldn't exist. Since creating hashtags back in 2007 as way of grouping online conversations, he's spent his time focusing on design and the open web at Google. Perhaps more accurately, redesign. Messina is responsible for the search giant's revamped brand badges, profiles and +1 button, as well as helping create the Google Developers knowledge base. After over three years at Mountain View's cavernous digs though, he's leaving for something a little more intimate. Starting next week, he'll call NeonMob -- a sort of online art / trading card / sticker collecting-hybrid start-up -- home. There, he'll focus on the site's growth and new media-activities like building a community. Oh, and as of right now, he's two pieces shy of completing his first sticker set. Maybe if you help him out, he'll return the favor -- it kind of is his job, after all.

Authorities outlined plans Friday to break up two sit-ins by supporters of deposed President Morsi, saying they would set up a cordon around the protest sites, and riot police used tear gas to disperse demonstrators threatening a TV complex. Morsi backers also showed their defiance by briefly setting up a third camp near the airport, but later folded their tents and left. CAIRO (AP) ? Egypt's Interior Ministry warned supporters of ousted President Mohammed Morsi on Saturday for a second time to abandon their protest encampments as a senior U.S. diplomat was meeting with officials on both sides of the political divide to try to find a peaceful resolution to the standoff.

Egyptian authorities have outlined plans in recent days to break up the two main sit-ins by Morsi's supporters as they seek to end the political stalemate that has paralyzed the country since the military overthrew the Islamist leader on July 3. Morsi's backers say they will not disperse until he is returned to power, setting the stage for a potential bloody showdown if security forces move in on the two main sites that are home to tens of thousands of protesters.

In a bid to avoid more bloodshed, Deputy Secretary of State William Burns held talks Saturday with interim Egyptian President Adly Mansour as well as Vice President Mohamed ElBaradei. Burns, the No. 2 American diplomat, was also scheduled to meet with Morsi's Muslim Brotherhood and their Islamist allies. The Europeans Union's special envoy, Bernardino Leon, was also involved in the talks.

Amr Darag, one of the Brotherhood representatives who was expected to meet with Burns, told The Associated Press that the group and its allies are looking for "confidence-building measures" before they will come to the table for talks with their rivals. Such measures could include releasing detained Brotherhood leaders, unfreezing the group's assets, lifting the ban on its TV stations and ending violence against its protests.

Ahead of his visit, the State Department said Burns would be discussing "the importance of avoiding violence and helping to facilitate a peaceful and inclusive political process."

The trip by Burns, his second to Cairo since the military overthrew Morsi, comes amid heighted fears of more bloodshed after more than 80 Morsi supporters were killed in clashes with police a week ago near their main Cairo sit-in. In total, more than 280 people have been killed nationwide in political violence since Morsi's removal.

The ousted president's supporters have vowed to continue their protests until he is reinstated. They have held several mass rallies across the country and daily protests outside security buildings, demanding that the crackdown on Islamists stop. They have also kept up their vigils at two main sites: one outside the Rabaah al-Adawiya Mosque in eastern Cairo and another in a large square outside Cairo University's main campus.

But a month after Morsi's ouster, many Egyptians have grown weary of the protests, complaining that they snarl traffic, prolong the nation's instability and are calling for the authorities to put an end to the sit-ins.

On Friday, authorities outlined plans to break up the encampments, saying they would set up a cordon around the protest sites while at the same time offering "safe passage" to those willing to leave.

In nationally televised remarks Saturday, Interior Ministry spokesman Hany Abdel-Latif again urged Morsi's supporters to end their protests, saying it would pave the way for the Brotherhood's return to an official role in the political process. He repeated the offer from the ministry, which is charge of police, to protect those who abandon the demonstrations.

The Brotherhood's role in Egypt's post-Morsi politics is one of the most pressing questions in the country.

In his first visit to Cairo last month, Burns signaled that while Washington was calling for an inclusive transition, it had moved on from Morsi and his Brotherhood group. But he also stressed that Egypt's "second chance" at democracy could not happen without the Brotherhood's participation.

Egyptian Foreign Minister Nabil Fahmy, who met Burns on Saturday, said Egyptian officials have made clear to their Western counterparts "that there is no moving back" and that the roadmap adopted by the country's military-backed interim leaders, which calls for elections next year, is open to the Brotherhood for participation.

"The roadmap adopted is the roadmap for this country for the upcoming period," he told reporters after meeting Burns. "Ceasing incitement and violence is, I believe, an extremely important step to take if we have any chance at achieving reconciliation in the short-term."

While Egypt's interim leaders have voiced an interest in reconciliation, they have simultaneously pursued a crackdown on the Brotherhood and its allies, arresting its senior leadership and shuttering their television stations.

In remarks published in the state-run Ahram newspaper Saturday, interim Prime Minister Hazem el-Beblawi said the United States is mostly focused on how to restore stability to Egypt.

"I don't think the United States was fond of the Muslim Brotherhood or wanted them to come (to power), and I don't think it is happy either to see them out of the picture now" he was quoted as saying "All that is asked now is that the situation stabilizes."

Morsi's supporters say their sit-ins are peaceful protests. The Interior Ministry alleges that some of the protests' participants are involved in "killings, torture and abductions." Last weekend, the ministry said 11 bodies were found near both protest sites, with some showing signs of torture. It is not clear who was behind the killings.

The London-based rights group Amnesty International also said it had testimony of alleged killings and torture at the hands of Morsi supporters inside the sit-ins, including a witness who said he saw one man stabbed and another have his throat cut.

In a new allegation, Egypt's state news agency reported Saturday that a 25 year-old worker was detained and violently beaten at one of the sit-ins. It quoted a security official as saying that the young man, identified Ahmed Abdel-Aaty Mahmoud, was found late Friday near a military factory south of Cairo with severe bruises and injuries. He told police he was abducted two days ago by pro-Morsi protesters who were participating in a march after he criticized them.

Cancer Signs In Pets

The big C, cancer effects our little pets too. For those of you who have pet cats and dogs it is time to notice every pain and lump on their body. Pets cannot talk to us but through their expressions we can feel their pain. Cancer is one of those deadly diseases which is painful and is a number one disease related killer.

There are a number of cancer signs which you need to be aware of. These cancer signs in pets needs to be noticed by the owner. There are times when these symptoms will not be purely indicative of cancer, if a pet begins to exhibit them you should visit your veterinarian immediately.

Just like with people, the earlier cancer is caught the better there is a chance for survival in battling the disease.

Discharges - If you have a pet dog or a cat it is necessary to notice any kind of abnormal discharge. If you notice blood and pus in the vomit, it is important to consult a veterinarian. In addition to that, if your dog or cat's abdomen becomes bloated it could be a sign of an accumulation of abnormal discharge within the body.

Lumps / bumps - One common sign of cancer to notice in your pet dog or cat is any sign of lumps or bumps on its body. Pet owners should check your pet if the lump is not resolving itself or is growing in size. You need to pay a visit to the veterinarian to administer a needle biopsy to find out of if the cells are cancerous or not.
Odours - When you have a pet at home, it is very important to notice any abnormal odours. Check your pet dog or cats mouth, ears, or any other part of the body. It is said that cancers of the mouth, nose, or anal regions can cause such foul odours.

Weight loss - One of those diseases which causes rapid weight loss is that of cancer. To notice if your pet dog or cat is suffering from cancer first check your dog's weight. Keep a track on your pet and consult a veterinarian if needed.

Wounds - One of the common signs in cancer is that of non healing wounds. If you notice any wounds on your pet dog or cat which is not healing, it is time to take action. It could also be related to a skin infection. So making an appointment with your veterinarian is a must to confirm what it is.

Bathroom habits - Every pet owner should be aware if there are any changes in your pet dog or cat 's urinary or bowel habits. If your pet is using the bathroom frequently and passing out blood in stool/ urine, it is a problem. This is one of the cancer signs which is common.

Pain - If you notice your pet cat or dog in pain, it is time to make note as to what it is. One of the common cancer symptoms in pets is that of pain. Notice if your pet is limping while running or jumping.

These are some of the cancer signs to be noticed in your pet cat or dog.

Topless activists enter Russian embassy in Sweden

STOCKHOLM (AP) ? Two topless activists climbed over a fence into the Russian embassy in Stockholm on Thursday to protest against the country's anti-gay bill and stigmatization of homosexuals.

Police were called to the embassy in the morning to remove the activists, who are now suspected of trespassing. They were released after confessing to trespassing.

The two women, linked to the Ukrainian feminist group Femen, waved a rainbow flag at the embassy's grounds and carried a sign saying "homosexual propaganda on Russian ground."

They were supported by two other activists outside the embassy, who shouted "Gay Rights are Human Rights."

One of the activists, Jenny Wenhammar, said the group was protesting against a recently enacted Russian law which imposes hefty fines for holding gay pride rallies or providing information about the gay community to minors.

Later Thursday a group of 150 to 200 people gathered outside the embassy for a peaceful demonstration against the same law.

The activities coincide with Stockholm Pride festival, which is being held this week and which has put special focus on gay rights in Russia.

Earlier this week, Sweden's Foreign Minister Carl Bildt also reacted to the deteriorating situation for gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender people in Russia.

"Hate-mongering against LGBT persons on the rise in Russia after recent law," he wrote on Twitter. "Repulsive. Inhuman."

Consumer Alert: Woman steals thousands from church

MGN Online

MGN Online

CONSUMER ALERT: An elaborate scheme to steal tens of thousands of dollars. Some of the money was intended for the hungry and homeless. The victims were caught and now their victims are angry.

Paul McFann is not mincing words when he speaks about this con artist. He is talking about the former secretary and treasurer of his church's council, Jane Loprest.

Loperest stole more than $119,000 from the church.

McFann says, "She had endeared herself to many. She's extremely intelligent, extremely personable, very knowledgeable with technology and most importantly, her ability to help others."

McFann, president of the church council, says Loprest used those traits to gain people's trust and then began raiding church accounts.

"She would cut checks to herself, she would increase her pay. She increased her pay, doubled or tripled her pay."

Laura Carter, a US Postal Inspector, says, "She covered her tracks really well. There were never any accounts that the church was overdrawn because of the way she was conducting the scheme."

Postal Inspectors used these surveillance photos from the bank used by the church to track deposits and withdraws.

They found that Loprest would write checks but never issue them. So, the books might "look" correct, but she was actually taking the cash for herself.

McFann says, "There were a number of contributions and causes, people in need, that were never met because the checks were never sent."

This is what made the 120 parishioners of this small church so angry.

McFann says, "I really believe it was a chess game, she loved the challenge, how long can I get by with this? What new approaches can I use?"

Postal Inspectors say oversight is key for any organization, whether it's for-profit or non-profit.

Carter says, "Conduct annual audit with a CPA, volunteers are great, but you need that CPA to give you what's going on with your books."

Janet Loprest plead guilty, and spent one year in jail.

She was also ordered to pay more than $100,000 dollars in restitution back to the church.

Changing states: An animated political map of the Republic of India

A look at the political map of India over the last 65 years would give an appearance of it being in a constant state of flux. It isn't only that the state boundaries have been redrawn over and over again but India's international borders have also extended by a bit (Goa, Sikkim, Pondicherry).

This animated GIF map of the changing face of the political map of the country shows how India's innards have transmogrified. From hundreds of princely states and 17 provinces before partition, to 14 states and 6 Union Territories following the Reorganisation of States in 1956 to the proposed 29 states and 7 union territories if and when Telangana is granted statehood.

Cancer vaccines: CDC admits, then retracts statistics

98 million Americans were injected with vaccines containing cancer virus

Lance Johnson
Natural News
July 30, 2013

The Centers for Disease Control recently published valuable information about polio vaccines on their site, but afterwards retracted the information.?Why has that information been taken down??Regardless, a Google snapshot of this information as it appeared on July 11, 2013 is cached here:

http://webcache.googleusercontent.com

The saved CDC information comes right out and admits that more than 98 million Americans during a span of eight years were injected with a cancer-causing polyomavirus called SV40.

This fact alone should serve as a testament to anyone: always question medical professionals who say that you or your child needs a certain vaccine or prescription. So much ?medicine? today is actually poison. Professionals are often duped into?believing in?the safety of a vaccine or prescription, when all along it may be laced with cancer-causing, health ravaging virus, heavy metals, fungus, formaldehyde, or neurotoxins.

What is SV40?

SV40 stands for Simian vacuolating virus 40 and was found in monkeys in 1960. This polyomavirus existed in contaminated batches of polio vaccinations in the 50s and early 60s. Fragments of this virus have shown up in human brain, bone, and lung cancers. This virus is known for causing cancerous tumors.

  • A d v e r t i s e m e n t

Uniquely, humans have built in tumor-suppressing genes. The?SV40?virus effectively disables those genes, suppressing them through the SV40 T-antigens. This leads to mutated genes that spawn uncontrollable cellular proliferation, leading to cancer.

Michele Carbone, Assistant Professor of pathology at Loyola University in Chicago, has recently found fragments of the SV40 virus in 40% of human bone cancers and in 60% of mesothelioma cancers.

Experts in the field are beginning to conclude that the Salk and Sabin?polio vaccines?were responsible for injecting cancer-causing viral strains into people, mutating their genes and welcoming epidemics of cancer.

The contaminated vaccine has been estimated to have adversely affected 10 to 30 million people.

The discovery of SV40

SV40 was first found by Dr. Bernice Eddy when she studied the minced kidney cells of rhesus monkeys. ?The cells would die without any apparent cause,? she reported. Taking the cells from the monkey?s kidney cultures, Dr. Eddy injected them into hamsters. Merck & Co. soon discovered this?virus, which was identified and isolated by Dr. Eddy. It was named Simian Virus 40 because it was the 40th virus found in monkey kidney cells. In 1960, the discovery was complete. Merck scientists Dr. Benjamin Sweet and Dr. Maurice Hillman published the findings. Dr. Eddy went on to publish more information about the SV40 virus. A single dose was injected into 13 newborn hamsters and 10 newborn mice. What followed was cellular neoplasms that developed between 156 and 380 days.

Still though, at the time, medical professionals defended the SV40 tainted polio vaccines, despite the published dangers of the SV40 virus contaminating the vaccines.

A more recent report, published in 2005 by the the National Network for Immunization Information, downplays the situation:

?Although SV40 has biological properties consistent with a cancer-causing virus, it has not been conclusively established whether it has caused?cancer?in humans,? said the report. ?Epidemiological studies of groups of people who received polio vaccine during 1955-1963 do not show an increased
cancer risk.?

With the CDC coming out and admitting that millions of Americans were exposed to cancer causing SV40 viruses in the polio vaccines between 1955 and 1963, there will be increased skepticism about vaccinations in the years to come.

Maybe that?s why billionaire vaccine pushers made the?CDC?take this important information off their site.

Regardless, now you know. Always make an informed decision. Don?t automatically trust a medical professional when they say, ?you need this vaccine.?

The crash happened near the station of Granges-pres-Marnand shortly before 7 p.m. (1700 GMT) on a regional line about 50 kilometers (31 miles) southwest of the capital, Bern. It came just days after 79 people were killed in a high-speed?train?derailment in Spain.

Photographs from the Swiss site showed the two regional?trains?locked together, partly lifted off the tracks by the force of the collision.

Police said several ambulances, fire engines and a helicopter were involved in the rescue operation. Rescuers had not yet been able to reach the driver's cabin of one of the?trains, said the police in the canton (state) of Vaud in a statement.

News website 20min.ch quoted Patricia Claivaz of the Swiss rail company CFF as saying the trapped man was the driver. It was unclear if he was alive.

According to police, the five people who were seriously injured were taken to the hospital in the nearby city of Lausanne.

Earlier, Swiss media had cited police as saying 44 were injured, four of them seriously. It wasn't immediately clear why the injury figure had been lowered.

Switzerland's?rail system is considered among the best and safest in the world. Accidents are rare, though three years ago the country's popular Glacier Express tourist?train?derailed in the Alps, killing one person and injuring 42.

DOE/Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory

From solar cells to optoelectronic sensors to lasers and imaging devices, many of today's semiconductor technologies hinge upon the absorption of light. Absorption is especially critical for nano-sized structures at the interface between two energy barriers called quantum wells, in which the movement of charge carriers is confined to two-dimensions. Now, for the first time, a simple law of light absorption for 2D semiconductors has been demonstrated.

Working with ultrathin membranes of the semiconductor indium arsenide, a team of researchers with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE)'s Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (Berkeley Lab) has discovered a quantum unit of photon absorption, which they have dubbed "AQ," that should be general to all 2D semiconductors, including compound semiconductors of the III-V family that are favored for solar films and optoelectronic devices. This discovery not only provides new insight into the optical properties of 2D semiconductors and quantum wells, it should also open doors to exotic new optoelectronic and photonic technologies.

"We used free-standing indium arsenide membranes down to three nanometers in thickness as a model material system to accurately probe the absorption properties of 2D semiconductors as a function of membrane thickness and electron band structure," says Ali Javey, a faculty scientist in Berkeley Lab's Materials Sciences Division and a professor of electrical engineering and computer science at the University of California (UC) Berkeley. "We discovered that the magnitude of step-wise absorptance in these materials is independent of thickness and band structure details."

Javey is one of two corresponding authors of a paper describing this research in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS). The paper is titled "Quantum of optical absorption in two-dimensional semiconductors." Eli Yablonovitch, an electrical engineer who also holds joint appointments with Berkeley Lab and UC Berkeley, is the other corresponding author.

Co-authors are Hui Fang, Hans Bechtel, Elena Plis, Michael Martin and Sanjay Krishna.

Previous work has shown that graphene, a two-dimensional sheet of carbon, has a universal value of light absorption. Javey, Yablonovitch and their colleagues have now found that a similar generalized law applies to all 2D semiconductors. This discovery was made possible by a unique process that Javey and his research group developed in which thin films of indium arsenide are transferred onto an optically transparent substrate, in this case calcium fluoride.

"This provided us with ultrathin membranes of indium arsenide, only a few unit cells in thickness, that absorb light on a substrate that absorbed no light," Javey says. "We were then able to investigate the optical absorption properties of membranes that ranged in thickness from three to 19 nanometers as a function of band structure and thickness."

Using the Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) capabilities of Beamline 1.4.3 at Berkeley Lab's Advanced Light Source, a DOE national user facility, Javey, Yablonovitch and their co-authors measured the magnitude of light absorptance in the transition from one electronic band to the next at room temperature. They observed a discrete stepwise increase at each transition from indium arsenide membranes with an AQ value of approximately 1.7-percent per step.

"This absorption law appears to be universal for all 2D semiconductor systems," says Yablonovitch. "Our results add to the basic understanding of electronphoton interactions under strong quantum confinement and provide a unique insight toward the use of 2D semiconductors for novel photonic and optoelectronic applications."

Jerry O'Connell gets skimpy on 'We Are Men'

BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. (AP) ? Jerry O'Connell got a surprise when he saw part of his character's wardrobe in the new CBS comedy "We Are Men."

He didn't find out he would be wearing a skimpy swimsuit in several scenes until he saw it hanging in his dressing room.

The suit wasn't in the original script. As a result, O'Connell told the Television Critics Association on Monday that the show is probably his "most nerve-racking job."

"We got to work very early and it's a little chilly outside. I'm continually trying to make sure blood is flowing to every part of my body," he said. "We're a couple episodes in and I'm in the Speedo continually. I have joined a gym and I've started drinking light beer. I don't know how guys like Michael Phelps do it all the time."

O'Connell first gained notice as a pre-teen in the 1986 film "Stand By Me."

"I was known as the fat guy from 'Stand By Me,'" he said. "I guess I'll be known as 'Speedo guy.'"

O'Connell's wife, Rebecca Romijn, knows a thing or two about swimsuits as a former Sports Illustrated cover model. She now stars on the TNT show "King & Maxwell."

"My wife's advice was, 'Go get a tan, do some pushups and maybe do some Pilates,'" O'Connell said.

O'Connell, Tony Shalhoub and Kal Penn co-star in "We Are Men" as newly single men sharing temporary digs. The show debuts Sept. 30.

Get Ready, Canada: Saks Fifth Avenue Is Coming Your Way

Saks Fifth Avenue announced Monday that it has agreed to let Hudson's Bay Company ? the Toronto-based firm that owns Lord & Taylor and Hudson's Bay ? buy the company for $2.4 billion. This means one of America's most famous department-store chains is now owned by a Canadian business, and it also means Saks will soon expand into the Great White North.

The chain's new owners plan to build Saks Fifth Avenue locations and its Off Fifth outlet stores throughout Canada, according to Dealbook. These stores will join Saks's other international outposts in Mexico, Dubai, Bahrain, and Kazakhstan.

"We are excited about what this opportunity and being part of a much larger enterprise can mean for the future of the Saks Fifth Avenue brand," said Saks CEO Steven Sadove in a statement.

Technically, Saks still has a 40-day "go-shop" period, during which it can still entertain other offers before officially becoming part of Hudson's Bay. Earlier bidders for the retailer included Kohlberg Kravis Roberts, a private equity firm that might have merged Saks with Neiman Marcus, and the Qatar Investment Authority, which owns stakes in Tiffany & Co. and LVMH, among other holdings.

Prefab Building on Florida Polytechnic Campus Recommended

The structure would serve facilities functions eventually. (PROVIDED TO THE LEDGER)

Published: Tuesday, July 30, 2013 at 12:01 a.m.
Last Modified: Monday, July 29, 2013 at 11:59 p.m.

LAKELAND | As Florida Polytechnic University gears up for a fall 2014 opening, administrators and staff have been working out of office space on South Florida Avenue.

But when prospective students and parents come calling, they will want to see the future site of the state's 12th university.

By mid-November, a premanufactured building should be on site to house about a dozen university employees to allow them to operate before permanent space is ready. Others will remain at the 1 Poly Place address on South Florida Avenue.

The university's Operations Committee met via conference call Monday and voted on the premanufactured building option. The committee will recommend the full board approve $1.169 million for the building.

They also heard about modular trailers and conventional construction, but the premanufactured option was chosen for several reasons, including the fact that it can be used by the facilities staff later, so most of the cost will not go to waste. It will be set up next to a campus control center for that purpose.

Contractor Pete Karamitsanis, president of Lighthouse Advisors, said the building should be ready to be occupied by mid-Novem?ber.

The concept of setting up the recruiting space is similar to that of a model home at a construction site. The approximately 5,000-square-foot building will give students and parents an idea of what the Florida Poly experience will be like.

"We are actually setting up a classroom because we won't be able to show students classrooms for a long time," said Admissions Director Scott Rhodes.

The classroom area will be divided into four sections and include a laboratory setting and a typical classroom.

The building will provide space for group presentations, conference rooms, private meeting rooms and office space for recruiters and financial aid counselors.

The staff wants the structure to present an appropriate public "face" for the univer?sity.

"A steel structure will communicate permanency, which we believe is critical at this juncture to selling the total Florida Polytechnic first-year student experience," Rhodes said.

Brochures, information on a website and videos might show prospective students a bit of what it will be like there, but an on-site setup will serve as a more informative way to describe Florida Poly, he said.

"Florida Polytechnic University is selling a completely new type of 21st-century college experience," he said. "So while you're selling the future and a dream, you are still selling a college experience. Therefore, it's critical that the experience be as real as possible and help prospective families visualize what they are choosing: Florida Polytechnic University.

The budget includes $919,302 for a total projected cost for the building, including $670,000 for construction and additional funds for setting up parking lots and land?scaping.

About $50,000 is budgeted for golf carts to transport people on tours. Another $100,000 is included for furnishings and electronic equipment, but Rhodes and others will be using a lot of furnishings the university inherited from the University of South Florida Polytechnic.

Steven Cole Smith - Tanner Swanson in victory lane at Lucas Oil Raceway after winning the 100-lap race for USAC Silver Crown Series cars on Saturday.

Saturday was a good night to be named Swanson at Lucas Oil Raceway in Clermont, Indiana. Brothers Tanner and Kody Swanson, from Kingsburg, California, took first and second in the J.D. Byrider 100, a 100-lap race for the USAC Traxxas Silver Crown cars held on the paved oval previously known as Indianapolis Raceway Park.

And it wasn't a bad night to be named Hines, either, as Tracy Hines won the 30-lap Rich Vogler Classic USAC midget race, while Tanner Swanson finished third, just behind Kyle Larson, fresh from an 11th-place finish at the Indiana 250 NASCAR Nationwide race at Indianapolis Motor Speedway Saturday afternoon, and a second-place finish at Eldora Speedway Wednesday night in the NASCAR Camping World truck series Mudsummer Classic.

Kody Swanson, 25, qualified on the pole in his for the Silver Crown race, and held the lead until Tanner, 21, started challenging him on lap 11. Tanner completed the pass on lap 14, and never looked back.

The 17-car race went caution-free until lap 49, when Jarrett Andretti, son of former NASCAR, IndyCar and NHRA driver John Andretti, spun in turn four after battling brake bias problems. Before the field was able to go green, the third-place car of Jerry Coons, Jr. spun after breaking an axle. The race restarted on lap 62, and Tanner Swanson again shot into the lead ahead of his brother, with David Byrne in third, Chris Windom in fourth, and Hines in fifth.

When the checkered flag fell on lap 100, Tanner, driving a Banjo Corporation Beast/Kistler, had nearly a half-lap lead over his brother, and was inches from lapping the sixth-place car of Jacob Wilson.

Tracy Hines drove his Spike/Stanton Toyota to victory in the Rick Vogler Classic.

Prior to the Silver Crown race, New Castle, Indiana's Hines -- who finished 13th in the NASCAR truck series Mudsummer Classic at Eldora -- dominated the 14-car Rich Vogler Classic from the pole. Darrell Hagen passed Hines on lap five, but Hines quickly re-passed him, and Hagen dropped back to an eventual fourth-place finish. Larson was next to challenge Hines, passing him in turn three after a slide job, but Hines re-passed Larson before they reached the front straight.

Hines took the victory in his Spike/Stanton Toyota, followed by teammates Larson and Tanner Swanson, both driving Toyota-powered, Keith Kunz-owned Beast cars.

Hines leads defending series champion Hagen in season points, 307 to 301. In Silver Crown points, Kody Swanson leads Bobby East, who finished seventh, 197 to 186 points.

WarGames: Google vs. Apple

The Apple Army goes to work. The Apple Army goes to work

Photo illustration by Jim Festante/Slate. Photo by iStockphoto.

Reminder: Matt Yglesias and Farhad Manjoo are wargaming a fanciful, definitely-not-actually-true version of what might happen if Google and Apple went to war. You can see how the battle began here.

As of Oct. 25, 2013 Apple has:
Cash on hand
: $140 billion
Personnel
: 100,000
Territory controlled
: Offices, retail stores, factories, and the political allegiances of China, Europe, the Middle East, and a growing number of Americans.

There?s a grim mood in the hastily assembled Cupertino, Calif., bunker where Apple?s executives have hunkered down. But the phone is ringing off the hook. Google?s tactics, though devastatingly effective, are also terrifying to many citizens. While click-dependent digital media may buckle under to Google?s demands, television remains Americans? main source of news and the offline coverage of Google?s offensive is devastating. The New York Times is able to get by on traffic from iOS devices (mobile is the future, after all), and a solid minority of American digital media sticks with Apple, hoping for a larger share of a smaller pie. Meanwhile, a European Union already worried about Google?s monopoly power and concerned about surveillance moves decisively into backlash mode, barring the company from doing business in Europe and seizing its fixed assets there. And while it?s true that Google has many offerings Apple can?t beat, it?s also true that Germany entered World War I with the strongest overall military.

War is a game of coalitions. Not only are there whole countries where Google barely exists (think China), but there?s a whole world of online services companies out there who?ve been chomping at the bit for a big Google scandal to get them into the game. Bing search, Outlook webmail, Yahoo Calendar, and Dropbox for storage. Google?s one-stop shopping is a convenience, but people in Google-hostile territory can use the Web without it and the company?s behavior is frightening people. Apple?s hearty band of loyalists can shop at the Apple Store and punch apple.com into the browser just fine?and while they?re there, many of them are adding their contact information to a new page which urges Apple fans to join the ?Apple Army.? The photo accompanying sign-up shows a cheerful, attractive, multicultural group massed in front of Apple headquarters, everyone wearing T-shirts of bright, primary colors. In the first week, 20,000 Apple partisans sign up. ?

And Google has forgotten the fundamental reality that the Internet is a physical entity. Customers are a little surprised to find every Apple Store in the Portland area closed at lunchtime, but it?s just a quick 90-minute jaunt down I-84 to Google?s data center at The Dalles, Ore., one of six within the United States. Tim Cook never really thought it would come to this, but as Apple?s longtime logistics guy he?s always made sure the company can get its hands on demolition and construction materials at a moment?s notice. And what can be used to renovate a store can be used to wreck a data center just about as easily. No government officials or law enforcement personnel will explicitly take Google on, of course, but everyone knows that if the data centers are destroyed so is the possibility for blackmail so it?s strictly hands-off. Meanwhile, other wrecking crews are already in motion heading out of Greensboro, Omaha, Atlanta, Charlotte, and Tulsa to attack the other data centers.

Factor In Food Cost When Deciding Whether to Fly or Drive

Factor In Food Cost When Deciding Whether to Fly or Drive

Trips to places about 200-400 miles away present an interesting dilemma; should you drive or fly? While most peoples' first instinct is to guesstimate the cost of gas vs. a plane ticket, factoring in food can make a big difference in your overall budget.

Trent from The Simple Dollar notes that many people forget that car trips can save you a ton of money on food, because you can bring a cooler to your final destination and avoid a few trips to the snack bar. Even during the drive itself, you can stop at cheaper diners, or pack some sandwiches yourself, avoiding airport markups. Your savings will vary with this tip depending on the length of your stay, but it's an easy thing to forget when you're arranging your itinerary.

800,000 UK jobs advertised across Europe - and foreign jobseekers even get travelling costs

The website EURES has more than 1.4 million vacancies across the EU, with the UK making up more than 50 per cent of them.

Foreign jobseekers are also being offered up to ?900 to cover travelling costs to the UK for interviews, while UK employers can receive a ?1,000 bonus for taking on a non-British worker, the Telegraph reported.

It comes at a time when Conservative business minister Matthew Hancock is urging UK firms to employ young British workers rather than better-qualified immigrants.

He said firms have a responsibility to ensure young people from the communities where they are based are given the opportunity to get a job and get on in life.

All positions advertised in UK Jobcentres have to be listed on the EURES website according to an EU scheme, the newspaper added.

After the UK, which lists 814,359 jobs on the website, the country with the second highest number of vacancies is Germany with 267,534 - around 20 per cent of the overall number.

Ukip leader Nigel Farage said he was "astonished" British vacancies were being advertised abroad at a time when unemployment in the UK is "rife".

"The fact that unemployed Brits are being pitted against 500 million people across the EU to get jobs in their own country is utterly reprehensible," he said.

"With two-and-a-half million people unemployed in the UK, of which 958,000 are under twenty-five, every job vacancy counts."

On Friday Mr Hancock told BBC Radio Four's Today programme: "During the last boom there was a lot of recruitment from abroad and, in fact, youth unemployment went up, even during the boom.

"This is about a change of culture. I'm arguing that it is companies' social responsibility, it is their social duty, to look at employing locally first."

Ken Cuccinelli: 'Focus of my campaign is on jobs and the economy'

For candidate Ken Cuccinelli, the focus of his campaign for Governor of Virginia is on jobs and the economy. At speeches and appearances throughout the state, he has laid out proposals to cut taxes and spur growth in the commonwealth.

But as questions continue to surround Governor McDonnell about gifts he received from Star Scientific CEO, Jonnie Williams, there are also some questions on the same topic for Cuccinelli. And despite being cleared of any legal wrongdoing, he has acknowledged his mistakes in the past few years when asked about his reporting of gifts:

"Clearly we can look back and answer that question, yes. But literally some of them came in at half the value -- as a box of these Tic Tac-like food supplements. I didn't know that was coming, I didn't ask for that."

In light of recent news regarding McDonnell, Cuccinelli now believes there should be much tighter caps and bans on gifts for officials and their family members, insisting that this will be something he will push for if elected governor.

When asked if he would also change the rules, he had this to say:

"Oh, dramatically. When I ran for Attorney General, part of what we ran on was an ethics platform. We got a couple of things but we got a lot of resistance in the General Assembly. One of the things that the governor's situation has created is a situation that will allow us to get a lot more ethics reform."

Continuing on the topic of McDonnell, Cuccinelli says the current governor "needs to think about whether he believes it would be harming Virginia in ways that he believes would be unacceptable.?

"And remember Rebecca, I started the state investigation," he says.

Cuccinelli says McAuliffe, on the other hand, didn?t disclose any of it.

?That's why I've called for two things," he says. "One, an independent ethics commission. Two, a $100 gift ban. And I would ask the Attorney General to join me.?

Cuccinelli concluded by saying that he has supported the reform of Virginia laws for some time now.

Crystal Palace Could Be Rebuilt By Chinese Developers

Crystal Palace by Alex KnightsWhen the second incarnation of London?s Crystal Palace burnt to the ground in 1936, Winston Churchill declared ?This is the end of an age.?

So today?s news that a billionaire Chinese property developer might be interested in rebuilding the palace could well mark the start of a new one.

ZhongRong Holdings is reported to be interested in creating a replica of Joseph Paxton?s glass and steel building that first housed the 1851 Great Exhibition in Hyde Park, and was later moved and rebuilt on Penge Common, now Crystal Palace Park. The second version was considerably bigger than the first, and housed a school of art, science and literature, as well as concerts, exhibitions and other types of entertainment.

Ni Zhaoxing, who has an estimated $1.25bn fortune and owns the Shanghai-based ZhongRong Holdings, said he wants to build the copy of the 900,000 sq ft building. It?s said that Zhaoxing has already appointed consulting engineers Arup to develop proposals for the South London site. The full proposals are expected later this year.

However, it seems everyone involved is eager to point out that these discussions are in really early stages.

A spokesperson from Bromley Council said, ?We are committed to improving Crystal Palace Park which remains a jewel, not just in Bromley, but in London?s crown. We are continuing to look at and explore all funding options, including grant funding, that might be available to help secure a long term and viable future. As part of this, we have had discussions with a number of parties and all of these conversations remain at early stages.?

Perhaps the above visual mock-up from earlier this year might sway a few decision makers?

Virginia Republican Campaigns to Outlaw Blow Jobs and Buttsex

In a move that's sure to be wildly popular among The Youths, Virginia's Republican Gubernatorial nominee Ken Cuccinelli II had made outlawing oral and anal sex a part of his campaign platform. What's got two thumbs and hates blowjobs? That guy! (awkwardly gesticulates with thumbs in vague direction of Virginia)

Today, Cuccinelli ? who currently serves as the state's nutty-as-a-fruitcake Attorney General ? announced via his website that, if elected by the People of Virginia, he will make sure that the People of Virginia aren't getting off in each others mouths and butts, because those things are Crimes Against Nature (coming this fall to CBS!)

One problem: the Crimes Against Nature Law Cuccinelli wants to resurrect has already been declared unconstitutional by the Supreme Court, as it governs what consenting adults do in the privacy of their own velvet Jesus portrait-containing homes. From Think Progress's Josh Israel,

The law states, ?If any person carnally knows in any manner any brute animal, or carnally knows any male or female person by the anus or by or with the mouth, or voluntarily submits to such carnal knowledge, he or she shall be guilty of a Class 6 felony?? Cuccinelli claims that the law ?is only applied to sodomy committed against minors, against non-consenting adults, or in public,? but fails to mention that what he wants to keep on the books criminalizes the private behavior of consenting grownups.

Protecting The Children is a noble cause, certainly ? only Cucinelli isn't trying to protect The Children at all. He's just continuing a bizarre career crusade against Gays Gaying all over the place. As Israel points out, in 2009, Cuccinelli told a newspaper that he believes it should be okay for the state to regulate the sexual behavior of grown ass adults, because homosexual acts are inherently wrong.

I'm far from the only one who has long-suspected that at the root of the GOP's moral panic legislating is an irrational, paralyzing fear of non-religiously-sanctioned sex (or any sex that doesn't include heterosexual male dominion over a subjugated, church-assigned female? THANK YOU GENDER STUDIES CLASSES I TOOK IN COLLEGE), but this. It's like they're not even trying to hint at pretending anymore. How are you going to campaign against oral sex and then furrow your brow and scritch scratch your head about WHY the GOP is basically dead to young people and women? Anal I can take or leave, but running against oral? Dude, you might as well run against corgi puppies or cat videos or ice cream or hugs.
