Rooms with Views: Olympic Village ready to go

(AP) ? Usain Bolt can thank me anytime for helping ensure that he gets a good night's sleep at this summer's London Olympics.

Organizers held a slumber party this weekend, opening the big glass doors and immense dining halls of the Athletes' Village to several hundred journalists, local officials and assorted others in a trial run - giving games planners a chance to work out the glitches before the Olympians arrive. I was a willing guinea pig.

This wasn't a stress test really. Stress comes in just a few weeks when 16,000 athletes and officials come rolling in, a flag-waving tide of youth and vigor, ready to play. No, no, this was just a little warm up trot - and let's be frank - a big party at a way above average location.

"It's to help us flesh out the glitches," said Nigel Garfitt, the director of the village and games services.

There were a few of those. The chatter at the breakfast table Saturday morning, particularly at the journalist end, was about all the things that went wrong. There was no water in my room for example (whoops!) and a village crew thought that 3:30 a.m. was a good time to dig up paving stones outside my window.

That's why Usain, the word-famous Jamaican sprinter, can thank me, because it gives me a chance to make this suggestion to Sebastian Coe, the head of the organizing committee: Please don't dig up the street in the middle of the night! Olympians are slumbering.

That said, since this is the closest I'll ever come to being an Olympian, these minor mishaps must be taken in stride, particularly as it is clear that the village is within a whisker of being ready. For this village there will be no disasters in landscaping such as occurred in the Athens Olympics, where the outside of many venues were bare. In London, the grass is manicured within an inch of its existence - you weren't even allowed to walk on its lush cushiness unless you ditched your shoes.

Much of the village is that way - it looks as if it were lifted from an architectural drawing and broadcast on a big empty space. It's kind of boxy and utilitarian, but very tidy. Its monochrome-ness will offer a good backdrop for the athletes, who will drape flags from the balconies and transform it with color.

The rooms are spare but designed first and foremost with the athletes in mind. Beds for the tall and small. Mattresses wear-tested by former Olympians. Bedside lamps that work. Blackout curtains to make the room dark should the sun ever decide to shine in this light-deprived nation.

The duvets feature pictograms of the Olympic sports, and the communal areas offer sofas in electric aqua with hot pink cushions.

The televisions will feature an Olympic broadcast channel showing the action but no commentary. There's WiFi and a laundrette in the basement.

There are no kitchens - but who needs to cook? Just a short stroll away, in the shadow of the basketball arena known as "the Meringue," is the massive dining facility, which will operate for 24 hours a day and seat 5,000 at a time.

The size of several American football fields, it features cuisine from each of the continents, and includes a Halal pod - food prepared in compliance with Islamic guidelines. It is the pride and joy of Jan Matthews, the head of catering.

Matthews once ran catering for the British army in Germany and knows a thing or two about serving on a huge scale. That's kind of necessary, as this is a place where having seconds or sixths is just fine. Portion sizes are up to the athletes. No charge.

Non-Olympians won't really get a chance to eat here, unless they have some super special reason to be with a team. Heads of state are known to pull up trays with their squads, but there's no VIP treatment for them here.

"This is about the athletes," she said. "It's not about anyone else."

Besides food, other diversions and services beckon along tidy paths with sporty names such as Champions Walk, Medals Way or Celebration Avenue. There is a post office, a nail bar, a Lloyds Bank, and hairdressers where free styling and shaves are on offer.

Judging by past games, athletes will get the Olympic rings shaved into their hair, according to Emily Brett, the athletes' services manager.

But just to make sure no one gets bored, there's also a recreation zone called The Globe, after the theater most closely associated with William Shakespeare. It has sort of a pub-like feel, though no alcohol will be served, making it unpub-like to anyone who lives in Britain, but never mind.

It features light boxes that say things like "fun fun fun," ''Wow" and "Boogie." There's a bar, a stage, a music studio, pool tables, a computer gaming area and TVs.

"It is going to be the buzziest place in the Athletes' Village," Brett said.

Just over 200 national Olympic committees will be represented, and each will get a little welcoming ceremony all their own that features the playing of national anthems. With so many athletes and committees, it may take as long as four days to run through them all. But there will be one for everyone, as organizers want to make it special for the athletes - the people without whom there wouldn't be any games.

As one might expect at an event about the Athletes' Village, concerns about the competitors' happiness came up a lot. But the slumber party was also about the thousands of people who make up an Olympics - the caterers, the transport workers, the firefighters and so on who have worked - some for many years - on a project whose primary goal is to show Britain at its most welcoming.

"We wanted to use it as a thank you to them," Garfitt said before he gleefully described all the forms he would scoop up with "feedback," on the event.

"It makes it all real," he said.

Interacting mutations promote diversity

Thursday, June 28, 2012

\Genetic diversity arises through the interplay of mutation, selection and genetic drift. In most scientific models, mutants have a fitness value which remains constant throughout. Based on this value, they compete with other types in the population and either die out or become established. However, evolutionary game theory considers constant fitness values to be a special case. It holds that the fitness of a mutation also depends on the frequency of the mutation. Scientists from the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Biology in Pl?n and the University of British Columbia in Vancouver developed a model to address the scenario of mutations being frequency-dependent but having random fitness parameters. The results demonstrate that the dynamics that arise in random mutants increase the genetic diversity within a population. Fitness, though, may even decline.

Population geneticists generally study mutations with constant fitness values. However, frequency-dependent selection is a recurrent theme in evolution: it enables the evolution of new species without geographical separation (sympatric speciation) or a relatively rapid change in the immune system of a population.

A mutation may be advantageous for low frequencies, for instance, but the fitness of the mutant decreases with rising frequency. A reverse trend in the fitness value is also conceivable. "Our computer model combines aspects of population genetics and evolutionary game theory in order to obtain a new perspective on genetic evolution," says Arne Traulsen from the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Biology. Whereas mutations have a random yet fixed fitness value in many mathematical models, this new model also enables a change in random fitness values with the frequency of the different types.

The results of the simulations show that frequency-dependent selection leads to higher genetic diversity within a population of individuals even though diversity per se is not favoured. The interaction of different mutations and the emergence of new mutants support the development of dynamic diversity in the population. One mutant does not always need to replace all other mutations or the original population. "It is possible for different mutations to exist in parallel such that a new mutant does not to completely replace the residents," says Weini Huang, lead author of the study. What is particularly interesting is the fact that diversity in this model remains naturally limited.

Fitness, on the other hand, does not necessarily rise with frequency-dependent selection in contrast to constant selection. By way of example, a mutation may arise within cells which halts the production of substances that are passed on to other cells. This can initially be advantageous; however, if it reaches fixation, the average fitness of the cell population declines. Advantageous mutations can thereby be lost and deleterious ones become established.

Scarsdale Mayor Addresses Popham Road Bridge Construction, Real

The following is the full address Scarsdale Mayor Miriam Levitt-Flisser read at the Board of Trustees meeting Tuesday night:

Concerning Mr. Benjamin's Public Comment about conditions due to the Popham Road Bridge construction, and short-term parking near his business on Garth Road:

The Village has started the process of changing four, 90-minute meters along Freightway to 30-minute meters. The meters adjacent to Mr. Benjamin?s barber shop and across the street are already 30 minutes. The process of changing meters involves noticing the change in the newspaper for 30 days and will be in the Scarsdale Inquirer this Friday with the 30 minutes taking effect on July 29, 2012. Once the meters are officially changed, a sign will be put up indicating the new time limit on the meters.

The Town/Village is currently in the process of conducting a town-wide reassessment program. This process will produce the fair market value of every property in the Town/Village for the 2014 assessment roll. An integral part of this process is the inspection of your home by a professional data collector. Over the next few weeks, data collectors will be inspecting homes, starting first in the Edgewood Elementary School District.?

The data collection period runs from June 18, 2012 through the second week of January 2013. Data collectors will collect specific information about a property, such as the type of building construction materials, the number of stories, number of bedrooms, bathrooms, etc. They will also measure the outside perimeter of the residence/building and any other structures on your property. They will not be collecting any information on personal property, such as artwork, furniture, or appliances and do not concern themselves with the tidiness of a property.

The inspection will typically take 15 to 20 minutes and you are encouraged to accompany the data collector during the inspection.? It is in the taxpayer?s individual and collective best interest that all new assessments are based on current and accurate data. The best way to achieve this is to allow the data collector to inspect your property. A letter detailing the physical attributes collected and to be used in the valuation, referred to as a data mailer, will be mailed to you in the winter of 2013. To value all properties as accurately as possible, it is critical that all property owners cooperate and participate in the data collection process.

Data collectors will attempt to inspect your home during the day, early evening hours before dark and or on Saturdays. All data collectors will carry photo identification and will be registered with the Scarsdale Police. If you are not available when the initial data collection attempts are made, a first-class letter will be sent to you requesting that you call our offices for an appointment.? If there is no response to the first-class letter, a certified letter will be sent. If you are concerned that you will not be in town when the data collectors will be in your neighborhood, please call 722-1324 and schedule an appointment.

Further information regarding the Scarsdale reassessment can be found at www.scarsdale.com or by emailing reassessment@scarsdale.com

A look at recent tech-industry earnings

Here is a summary of recent earnings and reports for selected technology companies and what they reveal about the state of spending and the overall economy:

April 6: Samsung Electronics Co. says it is expecting a record operating profit of $5.1 billion for the first quarter. It says the result would be a 97 percent rise from its operating profit a year earlier. Samsung estimated that its first quarter sales rose 21.6 percent from a year earlier. More details will come when Samsung releases its full quarterly results.

April 12: Google Inc. reports adjusted earnings and adjusted revenue that beat expectations. Google's revenue was helped by a 39 percent increase in "paid clicks," but the prices of its search-driven text ads continued to decline. CEO Larry Page called the first quarter "very strong," but acknowledgehd there's more work to do.

April 17: Yahoo Inc.'s first-quarter earnings show signs of modest progress under recently hired CEO Scott Thompson. Net income grew 28 percent from the same time last year and exceeded expectations. Revenue grew less than 1 percent, but represented a breakthrough because the company's revenue has been steadily falling for years.

IBM Corp. says first-quarter net income grew 7 percent, helped by strong profit margins in its services business and strong revenue growth across its software and services businesses. Revenue was flat overall because of declines in the hardware and financing segments, and revenue fell short of analysts' expectations. IBM increases its full-year guidance to at least $15 per share, above the $14.93 expected by analysts.

Intel Corp. says its net income in the first quarter fell 13 percent as spending on research and marketing rose while sales were flat.

April 18: EBay Inc. says its first-quarter net income grew 20 percent thanks to higher revenue from its PayPal business and brisk sales at its e-commerce websites. The results beat Wall Street's expectations.

Mobile phone chipmaker Qualcomm Inc. says its quarterly profit more than doubled as strong demand for smartphones boosted its sales; but it expects costs to increase as it makes more chips.

April 19: Microsoft Corp. fares better than analysts anticipated in its latest quarter, boosted by a surprising rise in sales of its Windows operating system for personal computers

Chipmaker Advanced Micro Devices Inc. reports adjusted earnings and revenue that beat Wall Street's expectations. AMD's revenue forecast for the current quarter was at $1.59 billion to $1.68 billion, while analysts surveyed by FactSet were expecting $1.59 billion.

Nokia Corp. reports a huge net loss, one of the company's worst ever quarters, and blames tougher-than-expected competition. It has faced stiff competition from the likes of Apple Inc.'s iPhone and handset makers using Google Inc.'s popular Android software.

April 23: Netflix Inc. says it suffered its first quarterly loss in seven years, but the setback was far smaller than analysts expected. Netflix had rising licensing fees and a bill for an international expansion. Netflix predicted that it would make money during the current quarter. Still, Wall Street was worried about tougher competition. Skittish investors keyed on a second-quarter forecast that calls for a slowdown in subscriber growth during the spring and early summer.

Chipmaker Texas Instruments Inc. says first-quarter net income fell 60 percent from a year ago as revenue shrank. But the results still beat analysts' expectations.

Xerox Corp. says first-quarter net income fell 4 percent as the company spent more on building its services business, which now makes up more than half the company's revenue. The company says it's investing in new offerings and long-term contracts in order to increase growth. In the short term, that has hurt profitability.

April 24: Apple Inc. reported blowout iPhone sales ? 35 million in the latest quarter, almost twice as many as it sold a year ago and above analyst expectations. Net income nearly doubled to $11.6 billion, and revenue was up 59 percent at $39.2 billion. IPad sales came in below analyst expectations, at 11.8 million units. But that was still two and a half times as many as it sold in the same quarter a year ago.

April 25: Motorola Solutions Inc., which sells communications equipment to government and corporate customers, says first-quarter net income declined from a year ago, when the company recorded a large tax-related gain. Revenue grew thanks to strong demand from the company's government customers.

April 26: Amazon.com Inc. reports strong quarterly earnings and says its Kindle Fire tablet computer remains its best-selling item. However, its outlook for revenue growth was slower than expected.

Online games company Zynga Inc. reports adjusted earnings of 6 cents a share, a penny better than what Wall Street expected. Revenue grew 32 percent.

April 27: A surge in Galaxy smartphone sales fueled earnings at Samsung Electronics to a record high in the first quarter, usually a tough season for the global consumer-electronics industry. The South Korean company outshined handset rivals such as Nokia Corp. Strong demand for high-end smartphones, such as the Galaxy Note and the Galaxy S2 introduced last year, helped mask lower profit from memory chips, another Samsung flagship business.

May 1: Mobile phone maker Motorola Mobility Holdings Inc. reports a slightly larger net loss in the first quarter as expenses grew more than revenue. Motorola says it still expects its acquisition by Google to close by the end of June. The deal still needs to be approved by authorities in China.

May 3: LinkedIn Corp. says its first-quarter net income more than doubled, and its revenue doubled from a year ago. Adjusted profit and revenue beat expectations. During the quarter, revenue grew across the company's divisions. The business-networking company also announces plans to buy presentation-sharing website SlideShare for $118.8 million.

May 9: Cisco Systems Inc. says its quarterly earnings surged 20 percent in the latest sign that a recently completed overhaul is paying off for the world's largest maker of computer-networking equipment. However, Cisco raised the specter of a sharp slowdown in technology spending, rattling investors already fretting about the economy's fragile condition. Cisco made a sobering forecast for the current quarter and traced it to skittish customers who are waiting longer to close deals and spending less money because of growing uncertainty about the economy, particularly in Europe and India.

May 14: Online deals company Groupon Inc. says it had a smaller net loss and sharply higher revenue in the first quarter, helped by increased demand from a growing customer base.

May 17: Salesforce.com Inc., which makes Web-based business software, says it had a net loss in the first quarter, but adjusted profit and revenue beat expectations. It raises its forecast for full-year results.

May 22: Dell Inc. reports disappointing first-quarter results and forecasts weak sales in the current quarter. The computer maker says sales to big businesses, consumers and the public sector decreased.

May 23: Hewlett-Packard Co. says it will cut 27,000 workers, or 8 percent of its work force, by October 2014. News of the cutbacks overshadowed the release of HP's latest quarterly results. The company's earnings and revenue were both better than analysts projected.

June 18: Oracle Corp says net income increased 8 percent and topped analysts' predictions. Oracle also posted a 7 percent gain in its sales of new software licenses, indicating there is still strong demand for technology that helps businesses automate their administrative tasks.

June 19: Software company Adobe Systems Inc. says net income in the latest quarter fell 2 percent, amid higher expenses. Revenue grew with strong sales of its Creative Suite product.

Thursday: Research in Motion Ltd. reports triple bad news: It's cutting 5,000 jobs, or about 30 percent of its workforce. It's delaying the launch of BlackBerry 10 yet again, to the first quarter of next year. It also reported worse results for its latest quarter, which ended June 2, than analysts had expected.

Moody's cuts debt ratings of 28 Spanish banks

Moody's Investors Service on Monday cut its credit ratings on 28 Spanish banks, saying the weakening financial condition of Spain's government is making it more difficult for that country to support its lenders.

The banks are also vulnerable to losses from Spain's busted real estate bubble, Moody's said.

The announcement from Moody's came on the same day that Spain's government formally asked for help from its European neighbors in cleaning up its stricken banking sector. However the request left many questions unanswered, including how much Spain would ask for out of the $125 billion loan package it has been offered.

That uncertainty led to losses Monday in stock markets in Europe and the U.S. Bond investors pushed Spain's borrowing costs higher, a sign of wilting confidence in the country's ability to support its banks.

The downgrades reflect Moody's view on the ability of the 28 banks to repay their debts. Moody's said the lower ratings stemmed from its having downgraded the Spanish government's credit rating by three notches earlier this month.

Among the lenders suffering rating cuts were Spain's two biggest international banks: Banco Santander and Banco Bilbao Vizcaya Argentaria.

A downgrade usually means that banks will have to pay more to service their debt. Investors demand higher interest for riskier debt, which is what the downgrades represent.

Spain formally asked the European Union on Monday for rescue loans to help clean up its troubled banking industry. The Spanish economy, the fourth-largest of the 17 countries that use the euro currency, is suffering from the aftershocks of a real estate bust that has devastated families as well as banks. Unemployment is nearly 25 percent.

The Spanish government's financial fate is intertwined with that of the country's banks. Two-thirds of the government bonds are owned by Spanish banks, pension funds and insurance companies.

Moody's said in a statement that the agency is encouraged by measures being taken by Spain to support its banks.

Moody's move came four days after the rating agency downgraded some of the world's biggest banks, including Bank of America, JPMorgan Chase and Goldman Sachs, reflecting concern over their exposure to the violent swings in global financial markets. Moody's also cut the ratings on seven German and three Austrian banks this month.

The downgrades haven't come as a surprise. But they come at a time of great uncertainty in the global economy. Europe's 17-nation currency union is under threat, the U.S. economy is slowing and the economies of India, Brazil and China are cooling.

EU leaders are meeting Thursday and Friday in Brussels for another summit aimed at reining in Europe's debt crisis. Debt-wracked Greece is looking to renegotiate some of the budget-cutting measures it has agreed to in exchange for continued support from international lenders. The summit comes just a week after Greece's new coalition government was formed following months of political turmoil and two inconclusive elections.

Two international audits last week found that Spain could need as much as $77 billion. The government wants the loans to go directly to the banks so that it won't be responsible for repayment in case of a default. That idea has met with resistance, however.

The size and interest rates of the loans likely will be discussed at the EU summit this week.

Investors are concerned that beyond a rescue for its troubled banking sector, Spain itself may ultimately need a full country bailout like Greece, Ireland and Portugal.

Steep losses stung stock markets on both sides of the Atlantic Monday. The Dow Jones industrial average dropped 138 points to close at 12,502.66, a loss of 1.1 percent. The broader Standard & Poor's 500 index fell even more, 1.6 percent.

In Europe, Britain's FTSE 100 stock index fell 1.1 percent, France's CAC-40 slumped 2.2 percent, while Germany's DAX dropped 2.1 percent

Many analysts believe big banks, including those in the U.S., would be the first to feel the hit of a freeze-up in Europe's financial system if Spain isn't able to convince bond markets that it can rescue its hobbled banks.

The uncertainty pushed borrowing costs higher for Spain's government on Monday. Its stock market plunged 3.7 percent.

The other 26 banks downgraded by Moody's are Caja Laboral, Banca March, Caja Rural de Navarra, Caixa Bank, Instituto de Credito Oficial, Bankinter, Banco Cooperativo Espanol, Banco Popular Espanol, Banco Sabadell, Kutxabank, Unicaja Banco, Banco Pastor, Confederacion Espanola de Cajas de Ahorro, Caja Rural de Granada, Bankoa, Liberbank, Ibercaja Banco, Cajamar Caja Rural, Ahorro Corporacion Financiera, Bankia, Banco CEISS, Catalunya Banc, NCG Banco, Banco CAM, Dexia Sabadell and Banco de Valencia.

Google: Chromebooks now serve web-happy students in over 500 European, US school districts

Google Chromebooks now serve webhappy students in more than 500 European, US school districts

Whatever you think of the latest round of Chromebooks, school districts have clearly latched on to existing models. Over 500 school districts across Europe and the US are currently deploying the Google-powered laptops for learning the web way. Specialized web app packs and that rare leasing model are already keeping the material relevant and the hardware evergreen, but new certification for US ready-for-college criteria will go a long way towards making sure principals everywhere take a shine to Chrome OS in the future. That still leaves a lot of schools going the more traditional Mac or Windows PC route, with the occasional tablet strategy thrown in; regardless, we're sure Google doesn't mind taking any noticeable chunk of the market in a relatively brief period of time. We'll see if there's more reasons for Mountain View to get excited in a few days.

Job Hunting Success ? Three Job Application Methods | The ...

Alright, it?s Monday again, and for all of you who are seeking a job (or trying to find a better job) like me, that means it?s time for another look at how to get your job hunt on. We?ve looked at how to build resumes for your hunt and some of the preparations for your job hunt, now it?s time for the real hunt to begin, finding a method of applying for jobs that works the best.

As you might guess, there?s more than a few methods to consider when applying for jobs. Gather up ten sources for job hunting advice, and you?re probably going to find a half dozen different recommendations for how to go about your job applying methods. Figuring out which one is the best is a fairly tough task. How do you determine the best job hunting method out there, given the number of types that exist?

Helpful hint: Don?t take the ?hunting? in job hunting too literally?

Here?s my advice: don?t try to use just one method. There?s a variety of jobs out there, after all; some are just perfect for you, some are less appealing, and some might be just barely better for you than being unemployed. For so many different jobs, there are numerous different techniques you can try. Let?s look at three of them, covering their advantages, disadvantages, and of course, when to use each different method.

Job Application Methods

Method Name: The Blanket Method

Details: If you?ve spent much time on job application sites like Monster and CareerBuilder, you?ve likely noticed that they make it very easy to apply for a job. Simply click on a job listing, click the ?Apply? button, choose which resume you want to submit (you can usually keep several saved), and viola! You?re done!

Pros: Quick and easy; you can get dozens of job applications submitted in an hour or two. Some job sites have been making this even easier, allowing you to simply click a check box next to each job in which you are interested and send your resume to all of them in fell swoop. In this method, you can typically cover hundreds of jobs during a single lunch hour. (Make sure you aren?t using a company computer while you do this, though.)

Cons: As you might guess, a method that basically flings everything at the wall to see what sticks will have a low response rate (one to two percent, if you?re lucky). Depending on how closely you watch the jobs to which you apply, you might end up getting responses about jobs you?d never consider taking.

Best Used For: The vast bulk of jobs you come across on most job sites. Chances are that if you?ve set your search parameters fairly broadly (to make sure nothing slips through the cracks) that you?ll get tons of job opportunities that simply aren?t a good fit. Double check the qualifications to ensure that they really aren?t something you are too impressed with, and if you still want to be considered (if you are unemployed or working part-time somewhere like Wal-Mart), you can use the Blanket Method to get yourself under consideration.

Method Name: The Standard Method

Details: Here?s the method you?ve most likely heard about (with some variations) from your job hunting sources. You find an interesting-sounding job that meets most of your qualifications, such as location, payment level, skills required, type of company, etc. You double-check that your resume stresses the qualifications the job requires, fill out an application form (if provided) that stresses the requirements of the particular company, and send everything in, usually through an online job entry. Depending on the company and the application method, you might also have the opportunity to include a cover letter; this is definitely a good idea, as it shows at least a decent level of interest in the company. Then, you basically just wait, perhaps sending a follow-up note a week or so later to see how the job-filling process is going.

Pros: As you might guess from how often it?s recommended, it?s a fairly common technique. You will generally get a decent response from some companies (about five to ten percent, based on my experiences, will contact you back). Depending on the length of the relevant application forms, you can typically get two or three such applications done in an hour of job-applying.

Cons: You?ll have to spend more time for each application than The Blanket Method, with fewer responses per application than The Personal Approach. As the most commonly recommended application method, you?re more likely to blend in with the crowd. Filling out application forms, many of which start to blend together, can make for a very boring application period.

Best Used For: Jobs you?re interested in, but not absolutely in love with. As you search through job offers, you?ll likely come across some that sound extra appealing, and that?s the time to break out some of the methods discussed here. You?ll get much more consideration than using the Blanket Approach, but not as much as if you use?

Method Name: The Personal Approach

Details: This one takes some effort (and usually some flexibility in how you approach it). It starts by looking up one (or more) companies you?d be interested in working for, and trying to find out as much as possible about them. Then, you want get in touch with someone in power (not merely the HR department) at the company, preferably in a creative way that shows your enthusiasm for the company. Personal letters to the higher-ups (particularly when they are rarely contacted) can work, as can unique packages that demonstrate your knowledge of the company and your sense of wit/humor. You aren?t trying to apply immediately, per se, but just get your foot in the door and get attention from someone in power, whom you can then provide with your resume and other information to continue the job application process proper. (Basically, the sort of method detailed in How to Land Your Dream Job.)

Pros: You can really stand out from the crowd with this sort of method, which enables you to demonstrate your creativity and zeal for the job in one fell swoop. (You can also avoid the HR department entirely with your application, not bad for those who have skills that Human Resources just doesn?t appreciate.) Depending on just how you submit your initial interest, you can get very high levels of responses and sometimes even direct offers (although that?s exceedingly rare).

Cons: As you might guess, the level of time required for this method is much, much higher than any of the others covered so far. If you aren?t ready to spend a day or two (or even more) finding out as much as possible about your potential target, this isn?t the method for you. It can also prove impossible for some companies, as they don?t provide any contact information other than the official application procedures.

Best Used For: Your dream job. If there is a job (or company) that you really, really, REALLY want (or want to work for), and are willing to put plenty of time and research into getting it, this is one of the ways to maximize your consideration.

These are far from the only methods to consider; as mentioned, there are almost as many job application techniques to try as there are job application advisers (close to as many as there are jobs, it seems sometimes), so you can undoubtedly find other methods to try. Of course, if nothing works, there are further techniques to consider if you want to try something less orthodox. But that?s a topic for next week?

The Anatomy Of A Pass, A Quantitative Analysis On Why A VC Passes

It is an exciting time for early stage technology company building and venture capital. ?Despite some early bumps in Facebook?s recent IPO (my thoughts here), we are seeing something of a return in the IPO market, as Facebook, LinkedIn, Groupon, Zynga, Jive and others have gone out. ?On the company formation side, founder momentum seems to be surging. ?Every week, I learn about about new incubators and startup accelerators getting formed. Kris Jenner Put Kim On The Pill At 14

Kris Jenner was on the Bethenny show where she talked about raising her kids, and putting Kim on birth control at 14. Go ahead and judge, but I am pretty sure there would have been a grandbaby Kardashian a whole lot sooner had she not. Lets face it, Kim is a very sexual person. I mean that is really why she is famous in the first place. So honestly Kris talking about putting Kimmy on the pill at 14 is not that shocking. In fact I will say it is responsible parenting. She says Kim came to her and told her she was ?feeling sexual.? What was she supposed to do? Give her the abstinence talk? I mean sure, do that too, but when a kid is ready, there is pretty much no stopping them. I give her props for having such an open relationship with her kids. That is wonderful that her kids feel comfortable enough to talk to her about that kid of stuff at such a young age. Kris, who bless her heart has five girls, says it has happened for each daughter at a different age, but the response is the same: I drive as fast [...]

PSA: Sony Xperia Ion lands in US today, yours starting at $50 with two-years of commitment

You've likely read our review of Sony's Xperia Ion by now, so just consider this a reminder for those who've yet to peruse it. After nearly half a year from being christened at CES, the Ion can officially be purchased today in the US. Breakdown: Disaster Recovery and Business Continuity | telovations

I was recently speaking with a CEO about her plan for business continuity should an unforeseen disaster disrupt their operations.? Her response:? ?I have insurance and several zip drives.? We are a small business, just getting started?it?s what we can afford right now.?

I replied:? ?That will work as a disaster recovery plan, but what about continuity ? your plan to keep working through the disaster??

She asked:? ?Is there a difference??

Yes.? Yes, there is.

Disaster Recovery vs. Business Continuity

FEMA reports that 40-60% of businesses that close due to disaster never reopen.? There are a host of different reasons that can shut down your business, for any length of time.? Whether it is 5 minutes, 5 hours, or 5 days, when you lose the ability to operate, you lose the ability to generate income.

Disaster Recovery Plan (DRP) and Business Continuity Plan (BCP) are terms that are often used interchangeably.? Whereas, they are interdependent ? they have different focuses.

Disaster Recovery Plans

DRPs detail the steps employees must follow during and after catastrophic event.? It focuses on the health and safety of employees; including exit and evacuation procedures, and CEO succession.? Some key points to consider while developing your DRP:

  • Method for backing up your info systems
  • What type of insurance your business may need to protect its assets
  • Documentation of critical info ? computers, account names and passwords, network setting, ISP/network administrative info, tech support numbers, etc.
  • How you are going to protect your equipment
  • A communications plan to ensure all employees evacuated safely

Business Continuity Plans

BCPs take DRPs a step further and also outline how your business will continue its operations during and after a disaster (as well as smaller scale events such a power outages) in order to remain stable and continue to generate a profit.? BCPs address additional issues that include:

  • If employees will gather at a second location or if they will work from home during the period of disruption
  • Where to route calls if working off-site (landlines at remote facilities/homes or cell phones) or if your business will enable emergency call center capabilities
  • Manner in which employees will access important documents and data (critical files/data stored on zip drives or stored on laptops employees can move to remote locations, or access to critical information stored in the cloud)

Simply put, your Disaster Recovery Plan focuses on how your company will react should it be affected by a disaster and your Business Continuity Plan is the process of preparing to keep your company open in case of a disruption.

The US Chamber of Commerce reported that the economic losses in 2011, as a result of natural disasters, reached $380 million.? Can you really afford not to be prepared?? Click here to learn how we can help your business maintain continuity no matter what life may throw your way.

Negative radiation pressure in light could make some tractor beams real, we're already sucked in

Developing a real, working tractor beam has regularly been an exercise in frustration: it often relies on brute force attempts to induce a magnetic link or an air pressure gap, either of which falls a bit short of science fiction-level elegance. The Technion-Israel Institute of Technology's Mordechai Segev has a theory that would use the subtler (though not entirely movie-like) concept of negative radiation pressure in light to move objects. By using materials that have a negative refraction index, where the light photons and their overall wave shape move in opposite directions, Segev wants to create a sweet spot where negative radiation pressure exists and an object caught in the middle can be pushed around. His early approach would use extremely thin crystals stacked in layers to manipulate the refraction. As it's theorized, the technology won't be pulling in the Millennium Falcon anytime soon -- the millimeters-wide layer intervals dictate the size of what can be pulled. Nonetheless, even the surgery-level tractor beams that Segev hopes will ultimately stem from upcoming tests would bring us much closer to the future that we've always wanted.

With Vladimir Putin watching, Fedor Emelianenko knocks out Pedro Rizzo

MMA legend Fedor Emelianenko notched another win in St. Petersburg, Russia, knocking out former UFC heavyweight contender Pedro Rizzo in the first round. With Russian president Vladimir Putin looking on, Emelianenko leveled Rizzo with a right hand then followed him to the ground to stop the fight.

Emelianenko now has three wins in a row after losing to Fabricio Werdum, Antonio Silva and Dan Henderson in Strikeforce. Before that, he was an unstoppable force, racking up 31 wins, one loss and one no contest.

Before this bout, Emelianenko told Russian television this fight would be his last, but he did not talk about retirement in his post-bout interview. It remains to be seen if "The Last Emperor" is truly done with MMA.

Minority Report at 10 a look at technology from today to 2054

Steven Spielberg's Minority Report, based on the Philip K. Dick short story, opened in North American theaters 10 years ago today. It was preceded by the director's A.I. a year earlier, which was famously a pet project of Stanley Kubrick's for decades prior, and was followed up by Spielberg's version of War of the Worlds a couple of years later. Together, they formed an unofficial trilogy of sorts that represented a turn to darker science fiction for a director noted for his more optimistic excursions into the genre. Of the three, Minority Report was the best-received out of the gate, both as a film and as a detailed vision of the near-future unlike any since Blade Runner.

That reputation has largely held up in the decade since (while A.I.'s has grown quite a bit), during which time it's also become a sort of technological touchstone. For all its bleakness, the future of Minority Report was one that we could recognize, and one that we were reaching towards -- at least when it came to the technology. Human-computer interaction would be more natural than ever, advertising would be everywhere and more personalized, and smart cars would deliver us to our smart homes. Today, it's almost as common for a new technology to be described as Minority Report-like as it is to be described as Star Trek-like. That was hardly just the result of good luck.

NY press club condemns alleged photog assault

(AP) ? The New York Press Club is condemning Alec Baldwin's alleged assault of a newspaper photographer outside a marriage license bureau.

The press club released a statement Wednesday saying Baldwin's actions "should not be tolerated." They say he is a public figure and that his activities are "legitimate subjects of media interest."

Police have confirmed that Daily News photographer Marcus Santos has filed a complaint against Baldwin. They say Santos claims he was punched while snapping photos of Baldwin and his fianc?e on Tuesday.

The "30 Rock" star says he was only protecting himself. Baldwin's publicist accused the photographer of being the aggressor and says the actor defended himself after the photographer assaulted him with a camera.

An NYPD spokeswoman says no charges have been filed and that police are investigating.

24 global wireless operators agree on data roaming alert mechanisms, do nothing about actual roaming rates

GSMA, also known as the entity that produces Mobile World Congress and Mobile Asia Expo each year, seems to be onto something. And by "something," we mean "getting 24 carriers around the globe to agree on a single point." That's no easy feat, mind you, and the latest release from Shanghai asserts that 24 operator groups have agreed to implement new measures in order to better inform jetsetters about data roaming rates when they land. America Movil, AT&T, China Mobile, China Unicom, Deutsche Telekom, France Telecom-Orange, Hutchison 3 Group, SoftBank Mobile Corp., Verizon Communications, VimpelCom and Vodafone Group (among others) are all onboard, with the following measures to go into effect by the end of 2012. For one, texts will be sent to remind customers of their data roaming tariffs when they arrive in another country, and there will also be a monthly data roaming spending limit paired with the ability to "temporarily suspend" one's data when usage exceeds said threshold. Of course, alerting users to how they're about to be hosed only seems like part of the issue. Till that's addressed, we'll keep carrying an Xcom Global MiFi or hunting for a local SIM upon arrival.
